Perry - You're doing a fantastic job!
This is a club run strictly by volunteers and none of us have to, nor do we wish to monitor the website or incoming emails as if we were being paid by the hour for our services.
Liz
New members or potentially new members must realise this is a CLUB not an auction site. The auctions are available for members but like any club, membership is not an automatic thing. You can't just walk into a physical stamp club, never having paid dues and decide you are a member or should be a member and voila!
We welcome all new and potentially new members and we welcome you to participate in the auctions after you become a member. As Liz and Perry both said, this club is run by volunteers. Perry does an excellent job screening new membership applications (we have had a few crooks in the past and this is an important part of being a member in good standing).
If you see something in the auction you like, have no fear, it will probably come up again. Just like on ebay or any other auction site, unless it's a rare stamp that is selling for millions of dollars, you can bet your bottom dollar, another one will appear!
Kelly
Keep up the good work Perry. No one with an ounce of integrity is going to ask for preferential treatment, so take the complaint from the audacious so-and-so with a grain of salt. Personally, I would have sent a two word reply (use your imagination) which would leave no doubt that I would not be fulfilling that "request."
Bobby
Perry I tend to agree with Bobby on this one. You are doing an awesome job, keep up the good work.
Alyn
Thank you for the great job Perry! Thank you to all of you guys, for everything you do to make this a great club. I'm sure I've mentioned my position several times in the past.. that I do not want to buy from "Sellers," but from Club Members.
Clayton
Also put me in the agree column.
In fact, I'd be a bit leery of someone who seemed to be demanding the chance to bid before being screened.
I am reminded of when I had the auto repair shop and the occasional potential customer who would arrive and expect immediate service. With few exceptions I would pick up the phone and (pretending) dial a number, then as the phone supposedly was ringing I'd offer the phone to the impatient one, saying this is Mr. So-and-so whose vehicle we are working on. Please explain to him, or her, that we are stopping that work to do your car first.
Haha, guess how many people were willing to take the phone from my hand.
If the fellow seemed mad and left I figured that not only had he taken his problem with him but had a whole bunch of potentially my problems in his pocket as well
The only exceptions were that occasional person who was enroute to one of the two nearby hospitals and had that"The baby is crowning. " look on his or her face.
Perry, you are our front line of defense against ne'er do wells, and you are doing a great job. To join the APS takes a month or two, as they do a check on the applicant. We should not rush into giving anyone poking their head into the site instant access just so they can try to buy something, disappear and not be heard from again. SOR is not that type of a site. So, take your time to get us the best applicants to be members. Anyone trying to push their way onto the site should be an indicator about what to do with that person.
Perry, you just have to consider the source of the complaintant and don't let it bother you. You have been doing a great job for a long time and don't even think about giving up the job. Volunteers work at their option, not as slaves to the job.
Mike
Dear All,
Recognition and appreciation of Perry well deserved and perhaps long overdo. If so (overdo) then we have all been somewhat remiss in expressing our feelings to Perry. This we can correct for the future.
Dear Perry,
Usually you don't have a 'thin skin'-but somehow this incident ticked you off. What was it about that incident that was different? Or was it perhaps a particularly tough day for you and that was the icing on the cake? Just asking.
Dan C.
Perry, I echo the sentiments of the others, and as a newer member here, I am very appreciative of the screening process. I would bet that this person who requested immediate approval probably wouldn't have bid above an opening bid, if at all. Well done, Perry, I say!
And as I get to know Bobby here, I am certain those two magical words must be "No way"; correct?
Cheers,
Peter
Absolutely, Peter!
I agree with all the comments above.
New applicants (and sellers in the auction)MUST understand that this a club FIRST that has an auction, not like the other sites many of us have come from.
Now that I am a member, I like the process the way it is. Keep up the great work, Perry!
Since I do not discriminate I use qualifications rather than attitude as a basis of membership I would not disqualify someone due to arrogance or mis-information (many do not understand the English language that well) I let actions dictate if someone stays a member or not...it's just as easy for a moderator to remove someone as it is for me to accept on my procedures for membership.
Perry:
I, among many, have no quarrel with how you process membership applications.
I just hope you keep doing it.
John Derry
Perry, just to let you know. There seems to be another wave of discontented BidStarters getting ready to come over here. They've been asking me where there is a better place with a good discussion forum. I'm referring them here.
I recently, today in fact, received a complaint about a new applicant becoming a member ASAP so they could bid on something in the auction. Well, I happen to go on line this afternoon by chance. New applicants must understand that I do not live on the Internet nor will I so they can bid or sell something in the auction. I have many other responsibilities besides being Secretary to Stamporama. If someone else wishes to handle this job then let Tim know and we'll come to some sort of arrangement whereas they can screen and check out new applications, even if it requires being on the Internet eight hours a day.
