Hi Dani20
I don't quite understand- are you looking for a reference topical list divided into those categories?
Hi Dan. To my knowledge the catalogs issued by Sherwood Springer are the most referenced in this area. Unfortunately they are out of print. I have a few of his books, so let me know what it is you are trying to ID, and I'll help the best I can.
-Les
God Bless one and all! I;ll try to get some pictures up of what I'm having a problem with.
Thanks guys.
Dan
Great-I got this message"Error: No file uploaded
Error Numer 2, "The uploaded file exceeds the MAX_FILE_SIZE directive that was specified in the HTML form, which is 350,000 bites. "
I'll have to request help from Tim to get the picture posted.
Dan
Use your photo editor/viewer to reduce the width of your image to 900 pixels or less and it should be small enough to load. Otherwise, you can email the image to me as an attachment and I will post it for you.
Bobby
Thanks Bobby. Tim has jumped in to save me, now to see if I can post it. If not, I'll give you a shout.I think I have it-now to see if it will post. Thanks Tim and you too Booby, for the great help.
The designation on some of the glassines (r1460-r1463)are from the dealer-I have no idea if they conform to any identification system.
Thanks again all.
Dan
Good Grief,
I left Les out of my thank you's and misspelled Bobby. Shows how shaky I get when I have to mess with computer images and stuff. Sorry for the lapse, guys. Know that you are appreciated.
Dan
That's alright Dan. Been called a lot worse than "Booby."
So Les, it seems that there is some series sequencing, and perhaps some manufacture overprint, but any actual reference numbers are beyond my ken at this time. Perhaps with your help that will change. I looked up the Springer reference catalog-they sell at at $41+ when available-none are available though. They first came out in 1975, and have gone through 8 re-printings.
Thanks for any help.
Dan
Hi Dan. I will quote from the Springer Handbook - "...stamps were either overprinted or inscribed with a code number to indicate the year. Thus, "SERIES 102" was used for 1932, "SERIES 103" for 1933, and so on. The system was discontinued in 1955, and stamps issued after that year continued to bear the same imprint: "SERIES 125," until on June 24, 1959, their use was discontinued altogether."
It's hard to make out the Series #'s from the scan, so I can't give you specific #'s. Springer used the prefix TA in his numbering system for Class A cigarettes. The numbers on the glassines are not Springers.
The cigarette tube stamp is either Scott RH1 or RH2. For the two state revenues check the "State Revenue Society" website or catalog. I don't have a copy of that one.
The Springer books are cumulative and there is overlap in the editions. I believe to have all of the info in his books you need editions 6-10. The 9th edition was the most recent update for the cigarette stamps.
-Les
Dear Les,
You are a treasure. That gives me the starting points I need. Hopefully I'll be able to find 6-10 of the Springer series. Any chance that you'd like to trade your literature for an equal value in stamps you might need?
Thanks again for the help.
Dan
Hi Dan. I'm so glad you found some of that helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I'd like to hang on to the set of catalogs I have. I found editions 5-10 as a set on eBay for about $10 a piece. I was lucky, they weren't listed in the stamp category but rather in general reference books. Keep an eye on auctions, I've seen most of the editions from time to time selling for just under $20 a piece.
-Les
Would anyone have a reference for me to help identify items in those categories? Scott Specialized doesn't do it. If a picture is needed let me know and I'll get one out to you.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Dan C.
