One thing that gets a lot of interest and bids here in our auction are the mystery packs. Some of our members put up packages of stamps (200+) and you don't really know what is in them, but you know because of the person posting the auction lot, there will always be some really good stamps in there as well as the lesser value ones. These types of package lot always get lots of bids.

Thanks Tim...Good suggestion!
Any more ideas out there?

It is almost impossible to answer this question. We have regular auctions at our local club. Competitive bidding will ensue if more than one bidder for the same type of material is present. What folks collect varies from stamp club to stamp club. Generally speaking, with respect to worldwide (non-US) you can't go wrong with collections/lots from dead countries, especially colonies, stamps from these areas usually sell. There always is demand for a Penny Black, which could also be leveraged in the local news media ("World's oldest stamp will be auctioned off at local stamp club's meeting"). Local postal history also could get folks going, as does anything Zeppelin. US is hard to predict. The trend is towards "uncommon" -- precancels, revenues, and the like.
Need some advice. My Stamp Club is having a White Elephant Sale of Philatelic Material.
This is a first, as we usually have a general White Elephant Sale, and the proceeds help fund the purchase of the latest Catalogs, and the annual Xmas party.
What would you consider interesting material to put in the sale for maximum impact?
Not sure that stamps are the best for such an event...except as "surprise packs". Other than the usual...album pages, stockbooks, glassines, cards, supplies, old catalogs, etc...I am looking for ideas that may help generate competitive bidding and help raise more money.
Has any of your clubs held such a sale? What were the results, and can you share what worked and did not?
(I am putting up a 2-posts, China Specialty Album (no stamps, good pages to 1990s, cover less than ideal) as an example of what I am thinking will sell. Your thoughts?
