I think the key to knowing what this is, can be found in the small script right under the 10 cts in the lower left corner. If I read it correctly, it says Hogar Escuela de Huerfanos de Correos. Meaning it is a charity label which profits would go to an orphanage school especially for orphaned children of postal workers.
Scott has a blurb re Local Charity Issues with limited franking power that proliferated during the Spanish Civil era. I had a feeling that this stamp was one of those, and hoped that some catalog somewhere listed these and could out something about the stamp. I know that such issues are next to worthless, but I am a curious fellow and you have helped. Thanks!
The stamp is listed in the Edifil catalogue, under the heading Beneficencia - Huerfanos de Correos. It is from a set of 5 stamps (paintings of Velazquez), issued in 1938.
Jansimon has good eyes! Yes, the beneficiary is orphanage; not sure about the part regarding postal workers -- Jansimon could be right but hopefully another member fluent in Spanish could chime in to verify that part.
The stamp is listed in Edifil under charity stamps as #30, minimal catalog value. 2nd stamp in a set of 5 (5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, 1p) issued in 1938 and depicting paintings from Velázquez.
A perf 12½ S/S was issued on 12Oct1939 (imperf variety also exists). It looks like your stamp is perf 10; combined with the postmark of 1938, indicates it is from the original sheet stamps and not take from the S/S.
Jillcrow beat me to it!
Spain issued a huge number of charity and propaganda labels during their civil war. I was tempted to enter the arena, then saw the endless issues and lived to tell about it
I have a maximum card with what appears to be a 1938 issue of the revolutionary government. Of course Scott is useless here. Any assistance will be appreciated.
