Well that's a keeper, a remarkable coincidence!
This pic is definitely going into my archive. Thanks for posting!
Beautiful one, Bobby!
I also have found 2 of the broken hat varieties. One is in my collection and the other went to a friend.
Great find!!
That truly is an amazing stamp! Draws your eye right to it! Very very cool. -Ernie
That is amazing! It's like a bullseye, or like the saint pictures with the light illuminating it your great find!
That is GREAT!!
I have nearly a dozen broken hat varieties, but none with a cancel that nicely placed.
Great find, Bobby!

Great stamp
My question: Do we know whos hat is broken? Columbus is to the left. Just curious.
Remarkable cancel!
Obviously as captain of a smaller ship, he didn't earn enough money to buy a better hat.
Dad found a Clark thread box packed tightly with bundled (by 100 each) 2c (a separate box had the 1c). Many years later, I sorted out the "broken hat" varieties. Some had nice fancy cancels, but nothing to match this one!
Even though they are quite common, I am always thrilled to find a "broken hat" variety on USA Scott #231. While examining some box lot purchases made over the weekend, I came across several 231s. Thanks to the helpful postal clerk who applied this fancy cancel, I had no trouble checking this stamp - it is almost as if, 120 years ago, he said to himself, "Now let's make sure Bobby doesn't miss this one!"
