Hi here are 5 old envelopes I'd like some help with. Anyone know where there is an online reference for them? Anyone know a value? Thanks

re: 1800's envelopes?

Dave,
I Googled the first two and came up with these answers.

envelope one:
http://digital.tcl.sc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/civilwar/id/273

envelope two:
http://www.aladin0.wrlc.org/gsdl/cgi-bin/library?e=d-01000-00---off-0rcwe--00-1--0-10-0---0---0prompt-10---4-------0-1l--11-en-50---20-home---01-3-1-00-0-0-11-0-0utfZz-8-00&a=d&c=rcwe&cl=CL3.1.17&d=HASH01b7b217d039ab3e0d85ce6f

and surprise, surprise the last envelope is also about Jefferson Davis:

Good luck with the others,

Mike

Mike,

That's absolutely fantastic. These would be a great topic to delve into for someone interested in Confederate history and philately.

Kelly,
You are absolutely right! I am just amazed at all of the interesting stamps and stories about them, that appear right here in our little world. It's sort of like the Antiques Road Show, only better.

re: 1800's envelopes?

Dave,
These are all very interesting covers, but not being a cover collector I don't know just where to look to find a value for any of them. You might try eBay for a start.

Just cut and paste the links as they are.

Here's the link for this last one. I just tested this and it worked instantly.

More good news Dave.

I just looked on eBay for "Scott's Extinguisher" and found almost the exact same cover you are showing us.

Good luck with the others,

Mike

re: 1800's envelopes?

Thanks Mike I will look it up. In the current Regency-Superior auction lot #2358 is the same as the A L His Marks envelope as a used cover. Its est. is $1500, it says that only 2 are recorded. Not sure if they mean as a used cover, color of envelope or what. The only diff is, is that mine is on a blue envelope and not used. Any opinions? Thanks all! Dave

re: 1800's envelopes?

Hi Dave,

These are Civil War patriotic covers, issued during the 1860s to encourage the Union war effort. The covers you have her depict General Winfield Scott, Jefferson Davis, and Colonel Elmer Ellsworth (the first union officer killed during the war). Postally used examples are much harder to find, as many Americans saved the envelopes as souvenirs.

I collect these types of covers, and I would be interested in trading for them or purchasing them from you.

Hi Frank, thanks for the note. I can see how a used example would be harder to find for sure.

I read a book some time ago about a trial of Ku Klux Klan members started in Charleston S.C. in 1871.
