Dear All,
With the help of Bobby and Terry, we're ready to share our thoughts with you and invite any/all responses.

Members Name Contact Info Catalogs/Resources Available
Dan Cohen cohendaniel64@yahoo.com United States Cancellations
1845-1869 Skinner & Eno
We see the list being filled in with whatever catalog you might have available to share with others. Bobby & Terry will keep a weather eye out to make sure we all play nicely, and their participation is most welcomed.

CDJ suggests that the list should have a note/disclaimer reminding those who use it that it is a effort to help them find something, more or less themselves and not a place to dump every question that crosses their minds. The wording would have to be smoothed out so as to not scare newbies away, but still prevent abusive behavior, especially inadvertent over use.CDJ also suggests that "The program could be started with a specific time limit at which the members involved could decide if it was worth the effort."

So guys & gals, what do you think-should we continue to try a library function or not?

Dan C.

How about a limit - such as a five stamp I.D. limit per contact......?

I would be willing to be the B.O.B./Revenue contact for U.S.;

I have a Scott Specialized, a Streamside catalog for fish and game stamps (by state),

a Troutman State Revenue Stamp Catalog and a few other misc. helpful books along the same vein.
B.O.B. is my passion - especially revenues!

We just need to let people know to be patient with their queries - some of us still work full-time and it might take a little while to reply.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

I think a listing of one's catalogs and the catalog years helps everyone know who has what. For example, on another site, a question was raised on the ID of a postal-fiscal stamp from Russia. The person who answered the question stated that those stamps were not listed in Scott. He had a 2007 catalog. In the 2011 catalogs, Scott did start listing Russian postal-fiscal issues. It helps everyone stay coordinated with the information being given out.

I also agree that members need to be considerate and not dump on everyone with alot of stamps needing identification, AND include a picture of the stamp. The catalogs have information to help ID stamps. I think people ought to try to ID a stamp themselves first, then ask when they can't find the answer. That also helps them learn how to use the catalogs.

I am a member in another forum where members can list literature they own in their profile, similar to listing their collecting interests. I believe this was instituted for bragging rights as much as for enabling members to find other members who could help out with info. Generally speaking, I welcome identification questions that require more than just the Scott catalog posted openly on the discussion board. I always learn from these quesions. Emailing scans back and forth behind the scenes will not benefit other members as much. However, it is a member service and members helping other members is an important aspect of stamporama.

Michael,
To your point-I think an article like that would be a wonderful addition to our library of articles, and if it's O.K. with Terry and Bobby, we could refer to it from our site (where ever that might be.) Just check with Ralph to be certain we aren't going over old ground.
Good man.

@ michael78651

I can write this guide right here:

a) read the introduction to the catalog,
b) did you really read the introduction to the catalog?
c) OK, flip to the back of the catalog and use the alphabetical index and identifier;
d) No inscription on the stamp match what is listed? -- OK, use the illustrated identifier.
e) Still can't find it? Start over process at b. one more time -- Sorry, that's how you learn (there is no short cut to learning how to identify stamps, it just takes practice.) f) Nothing, yet? OK, post a question ...

Arno,

I think you should start a new thread under 2 topics, the topic on identifying stamps and the one on catalogs. Title the threads something appropriate for the Topic such as "how to use a catalog" and "How to use catgalog to identify stamps"

Many of the recent questions I read in the past week would have been unnecessary if the collector had the basic knowledge you set out in you post. I remember when I was a beginner (oh so many years ago) and purchased my first catalog. I was a pretty bright kid, but it was still Greek to me! A basic "How to" like you set out would have been ever so helpful.

Good one, Arno.

I think there could be a few more tips beyond the catalog. Not everyone will have a catalog. A similar process can be done with internet search engines. There also are stamp identifier books available. I was thinking of an article that covers more than just the catalogs.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Bobby,

My short guide was obviously (?) to be taken with a grain of salt and a meant to be funny response to Michael's prior posting. We all know that working the Scott catalog is not as easy as that and there are some helpful hints that could be given (similar looking stamps could be air mails not listed with the regular issue etc.). More power to Michael for offering to put such a guide together! However, it is also true that some problems with finding a stamp in a catalog could actually be solved by reading the catalog.

Now, from my six year experience with stamporama this little side discussion about how to use catalogs within the discussion of what catalog resources are available is likely over. So, I will not follow your suggestion of opening a new discussion for this digression. However, it is also possible that another member responds. This is what we do. We digress. If not for Dan's initial digression in the perfin thread, we would not have this discussion etc. You need to build up some tolerance for that as a freshly minted moderator.

To get back to the original topic: For some years I have been collecting philatelic books as much as stamps. I have a full set of Scott and Michel catalogs for my country collections. I have most of the standard references for U.S. postmarks (post-1890 to present, i.e., no fancy cancels). That is about sixty volumes. I also have a good number of the standard references on U.S. WWII military mail, and U.S. and German WWI postal history (perhaps thirty books?). Knowing what I know, I can answer probably about 50% of question on U.S. postmark after 1890, about 30% of questions on US WWII, and about 40% of questions on US and German WWI. So, if you have a question in any of these areas, please ask and I may be able to help.

I have a bunch of other books, some areas that I wanted to collect, but did not get into after all (or yet), or just wanted to learn more about. So, I have a few books each in the following areas without claiming major expertise: US and WW meter mail, KuK WWI, Paquebots, German machine cancels, and foreign postal stationary.

Everything else is to random to list.

Arno

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

A few years ago, in our little known FAQ section I started a FAQ on stamp identification for beginners. Stamp Identification FAQ Although everything is at a fairly basic level, it covers quite a bit of ground - catalogs, paper types, perfs, watermarks etc. As a FAQ it is intended to be a shared/collaborative effort, so any ideas to enhance or improve it would be most welcome.

Dan-
I agree that articles should stay with articles. If people do add to the FAQ's, that would be good as well. Can there be a separate link under Resources that would bring us to the page informing people how to appropriately use the guide and then listing the members and their resources? Or is that what you are already thinking?

Just an observation:

My take is that the "persona" of Stamporama is meant to be a comfortable, relaxed environment where beginner, intermediate, and advanced collectors alike can ask questions and share information. This current discussion, sheparded by Dan is the perfect example of this. Regardless of what comes out of this discussion, whether it is a new FAQ, resource list, or database, I hope we leave this thread in place so future "new members" or looky-loos can see what this forum is all about.

Since I already provide answers to many questions concerning Machins and the use of the Machin Maniacs bible, "The Complete Deegam Machin Handbook" for the Machin Forum site, I think that I should volunteer to do the same here.
Actually, I have been doing that anyway when such queries pop up.
So put me down as the Machin Docent.

Charlie, That's pretty Docent of you to accept that assignment. LOL (sometimes I just crack myself up)

A few years ago I had the "complete Deegam----" but after getting a hernia from using that monster I sold it. I also have many other catalog's available to share with anyone that needs assistance. There are several Michel catalog's, mostly Europe, no German specialized though, a Zumstein, Facit, Yvert & Tellier, JSDA Japanese catalog (this is a wonderful catalog for anyone that collects Japanese stamps), Australia, New Zealand , the ubiquitos Scott's 2009 edition, even a very lousy Chinese catalog (pictures are B & W and hardly of word of English in it. In fact, if there is anyone out there that wants the Chinese catalog, just send me THE word and it's yours, free of charge. Just put your name and address on a $50 bill and send it to me. LOL, seriously NO CHARGE. FCFS.

Interesting initiative, let's see what I can contribute:

almost complete set of Michel 2009/2010
Scott 2009
NvPH Netherlands specialized catalogue
OBP Belgium catalogue
Facit (Scandinavia), Sakura (Japan), Lape (Finland), Vlastos (Greece), RHM (Brazil), Unitrade (Canada) and perhaps a few more I cannot recall right now.

Greetigs All

I virtually have a library which contains numerous books, clippngs andsome cataloues.

I am not trying to make it look like I am bagging here but I have well over 300 books, numerous print-outs and a collection of clippngs, last count 25,000 pages plus (which I am down-sizing and recycling the paper) that I am trying to organize alphabetically.
To date ths has been an on-going task and will be for a while .

I am willing to share whatever information I have.

Okay, All....

I have recorded a total of 87 reference entries from a collection of 11 members. I think this is a terrific start.

I am willing to maintain the listing going forward as members want to add or delete items, and as new members want to list their libraries.

I have compiled them all in an Excel spreadsheet. My question now would be where can we put this listing to the benefit of the membership? Where do we go from here? Can someone offer a suggestion on how this can be integrated into the web site?

If you post it in a Discussion Board, it'll disappear. How about adding a link on the Main Menu right after "Contact WebMaster". It could be called "Member Resources". When someone clicks on the link, they'll go to a page that has a brief introduction, and then the list. Were you also thinking of having each member's name hot so that if someone clicked on it, they would open the messaging system and be able to send a question directly to the selected member?

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

I'm happy to look up values or information. I have several very specialized HK and British Treaty Port references on hand and the entire Scott 2012, 2009, and 2007 catalogues, but the references I'm most asked about and which I reference the most in answering ID questions are:

Webb "The Philatelic and Postal History of Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports of China and Japan"

Proud "Postal History of Hong Kong"

Barefoot "British Commonwealth Revenues (2008)"

Stoneham "Great Britain Stamp Catalogue (14th Ed.)"

Booth "Collect GB First Day Covers (29th Ed.)"

Mellone "US First Day Cover Catalogue and Checklist (2007)"

Stanley Gibbons "Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840-1970 (2011)"

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

I've been out awhile, so I missed this thread.

If Nigel posted his list, SOR might need to increase its website storage!

Is it too late to add my library? If not, do I simply post it here? I can separate it into 2 lists: catalogs, other reference works.

This is not a hard rule for me if anybody wants to ask questions from my library; but my personal preference is that any questions and answers be posted online when possible. I've learned quite a lot over the years by reading questions/answers posted by others. In addition, it gives others an opportunity to add onto or correct any replies I make. Also, posting makes it accessible to internet search engines -- drawing people to this site. Just my 1c worth.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

I have access to the Northern Philatelic Society's library. While being not comprehensive worldwide, it does have quite a bit of reference material especially in the US and Europe. Other areas of strength are Japan, Mexico and British Commonwealth.

We also have a Forbin catalog, a couple of Sanabria catalogs (1966), some Higgins and Gage catalogs, and a number of periodical collections some of which are yet to be cataloged and bound (or the other way around).

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

To add a few of my books here:

Jones Railway Parcel Post Cancellations of Belgium. 2003 ed.
The Postage Stamps of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Nicholas Argenti, 1976.
Stanley Gibbons British Empire Catalogue, 1952.

******************

I really enjoy reading through "The Rare Stamp Guide Book." Everything he has to offer is for "the small sum of $1."

Here are two advertisements amongst others in the book that will give you guys a chuckle.

******************

David (amsd) this one is for you Big Grin

Offer Number Ten:
This is a Collection of TWENTY-THREE ALL DIFFERENT of the beautiful and popular Christmas Seals, including one from as FAR BACK AS 1909. This Collection of Seals is one of our most popular sellers, and rightly so, for it is both beautiful and educational, and makes an attractive showing when mounted. Send for this Collection today and you will have something you will be proud of to show your friends. The price is only $1 for the ENTIRE COLLECTION OF TWENTY-THREE ALL DIFFERENT. Price subject to change without notice. Please do not order C.O.D.

******************

Now here's Offer Number Twelve (this one's a biggie!):
This is a Large Foreign Collection consisting of OVER TWO HUNDRED DIFFERENT UNUSUAL STAMPS from all parts of the World. This Collection is full of portraits from practically every Country on the Globe, from the Far North of Siberia, to the Far South of Australia and the Indian Ocean; from the distant Holy Land, to the far-off South Seas; from the Deserts in North Africa to the diamond mines in South Africa; from War-torn China to the snake-infested jungles of India and the Malay Archipelago; from the cold Northern Wilds of Santa-Claus land to the Southern-most tip of South America; from the palm-fringed Islands in the Caribbean to the Oriental Cities and jungles in the Far East. No two stamps alike, all are different, genuine, and in fine condition. It might take You perhaps a lifetime to gather such a Fine Collection from the old correspondence of your neighbors and friends. Remember, this is a Collection of ALL DIFFERENT stamps, not just a common mixture of many duplicates. Among the famous stamps contained in this BIG Collection are:
1 - OVER A HUNDRED STAMPS from Old Countries of Europe before the war, such as Norway, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Denmark, Poland, Danzig, Latvia, Lithuania, Bosnia, Serbia, Estonia, Jugoslavia, Greece, etc.
2 - Stamp issued during the very short reign of King Edward the Eighth of England, who left his throne to marry the American Mrs. Simpson. (The only portrait of this King ever put on a stamp).
3 - Large Blue Stamp 45 years old showing Columbus in sight of land.
4 - A BILLION MARK STAMP of Germany (1,000,000,000). Think of it! A THOUSAND MILLION MARKS is probably one of the largest denomination stamps ever issued.
5 - A beautiful large stamp from an Island in the Caribbean Sea.
6 - An old stamp issued in the 19th Century by the Empire of China, once a great nation.
7 - A Famous "Jubilee" Stamp of Great Britain.
8 - A stamp from Egypt, showing the Sphinx and Pyramid.
9 - An old stamp from Russia, issued before the Revolution, during the Czarist Regime.
10 - A stamp from far-off Ceylon in the Indian Ocean.
11 - A British stamp, almost 100 years old, (one of the World's Earliest Stamps).
12 - A stamp showing Adolph Hitler (it is assumed millions of these were destroyed).
13 - An odd stamp from the Interior of Africa.
14 - An early Canada stamp showing Queen Victoria when young.
15 - A seldom-seen stamp from a Native State in the interior of India.
16 - A stamp from a far-off South Sea Island.
17 - An old stamp from Spain before the Revolution.
18 - A stamp from the Far East Jungles of the Malay Archipelago, showing wild tiger ready for attack.
THINK OF IT! TWO HUNDRED ALL DIFFERENT STAMPS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD including many countries now out of existence, and the price of this Wonderful Collection is only $1. Send for this Collection today and you will have many, many evenings fun and education looking over all these stamps. We will refund if out. Please do not order C.O.D. Sent postpaid at your risk. Insurance 10c extra.

******************

When I read some of these advertisements, I can't help but think of my own collection. All the "specialised" items - making sure I have MNH, then there are the "perfect" cancellations. All the expenses put into mounting and creating beautiful displays for my collection. And yet, how often do I stop to just look at "simple beauty" as this advertisement suggests? "A wild tiger ready for attack," "Sphinx and Pyramid," etc. I simply put these into Approval Books and call it a day. Or I look at the Chinese stamps he so excitingly advertises and all I see is the insurmountable details listed by Scott in trying to identify one of them.

******************

Here's one last one for all you US Revenue collectors:

$1000.00
Here is your chance to get something which is seldom seen - a THOUSAND DOLLAR STAMP. Think of it! A Thousand Dollars is the highest priced stamp ever sold by the United States Government.

This is a large orange-colored stamp over 1 1/2 inches tall, used only from 1918 to 1934. To prevent theft of these high-value stamps the Government printed each one with a different number - no two alike - so in getting one of these you will have the only one of its kind in the world! It will be the showpiece of your collection.
We have been lucky enough to secure a small amount of these, taken from old documents, and will sell them as they come at only $1 each, while they last. If sold out your money will be promptly refunded. Sent postpaid, your risk. Insurance 10c extra.

******************

Granted $1 was a lot of money at the tail end of WWII, but I just find this book and its offers so fascinating. They also had a limited number of US, Foreign and Gold Coins. Apparently the person who owned this book took advantage of that offer because one of the offer coupons is ripped out at the end of the advertisement.

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I do Happy If anyone wants to see some of the other advertisements in there, I'll post them.

Kelly,

i got a great chuckle. Thanks for thinking of me.

Initially, I was thinking why is Kelly offering me seals here; odd place for it. If I hadn't read all the way to the end, puzzled, re-read, you would have had a lot of explaining to do why my dollar didn't get me my promised 23 all different seals.

Early seals were offered at a penny each, so the "value" had quadrupled in the intervening forty years.

Collectors should also note how much better seals retain their value, going at 4c each while stamps were being offered at two for a penny. So, who's the likely Charles Schwabb among us, I ask you.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

I have a lot of material, but reluctant to list as I am a little confused about why an online forum would encourage offline identification. Offline ID benefits one person, whereas online ID benefits everyone.

I'm not trying to be negative as I'm sure its a worthwhile undertaking to catalog what reference materials members have. Its just that this is the second time I've read through this thread and I'm still lost - I mean I get the offline ID bit, just wondering if there's more I'm missing. Confused

I can think of a couple disadvantages to offline ID if anyone cares (besides the obvious already hinted at earlier in the thread):

1. It could be quite labor intensive in the long run (collectively so to speak) if different folks ask to ID the same things from different people.

2. Having answers online and available to search engines (e.g., Google) is a great way to get new members. In fact, searching for online answers to ID/forgery questions is one way I have developed the list of online links/favorites and the I currently have. Its also been an entree into other forums.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

The answer to this question is found in the recent Rambler newsletter. The goal right now is to compile the list of what members have. We are in the process of gathering this information which will eventually be placed in a very organised manner on a page of its own. Then when a member would like information that can be found in these materials, he or she may either post it on its own thread with a request to the owners of said reference to respond so that all may benefit. Or - privately message an individual but then post the correspondence on a thread so that all may benefit.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

That is awesome. Thanks.

Can you tell me what category is Album Weeds? It's been listed by a few members but I am not familiar with it and I don't know what category it should be placed under.

To answer your question - If you wish to send me a direct list via SOR message or to my email address in my profile, that would be fine as well. There is are a lot of references I need to go through to get them categorised so that we can make it a clear list available to members. While I'm working on that (which will be temporarily postponed due to my surgery next week), go ahead and continue posting on this thread. That way members can take advantage of the references materials others have to offer.

Again: For those who are inquiring of material offered by a member - please post your inquiry in its own thread under appropriate category on the discussion board with a reference to the owner(s) of the material. Then send a private message to the owner(s) of the material to let them know you have posted your inquiry. For the benefit of all members, the inquiry should be responded to within the thread on the discussion board.

The full title is actually "Album Weeds or How to Detect Forged Stamps". So it is a book on early forgeries. It was compiled in 1882, so it only covers the early forgeries.

Kim,

That is a very impressive library! I have a few of your reference books, but there is one I did not see in your list that I consider a top 5 in my very limited library:

Baxter - Printing Postage Stamps by Line Engraving (1939)

They can be had used on Amazon for $12 plus $4 shipping.

Perhaps drop a last minute Father's Day hint?

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Thanks, Lars! I'll keep it in mind.

My guess is that those Amazon books are the 1982 reprint. From what I understand, the 1939 1st edition is sort of a collector's item. While a brand new 1982 reprint can be easily had for under $20, the original 1939s are typically closer to $100. As far as I know, the content is the same.

So many catalogs and books to get, so little space and time (not to mention money).

There's a big civil war going on between my catalogs/books/journals and my stamps right now. The catalogs have the advantage of weight, but the stamps have the overwhelming numbers...

Kim, you are correct that the price quoted is for the reprint, but the value is in the content! Having said that, with a bit of patience and persistence you may also be able to add a first edition to your library for not much more. There are 550 out there to be had! (I own #471 of 550). Buy-It-Now on eBay is $300 (or best offer) with FREE shipping for #51 of 550. What a deal!!!

But seriously, get the reprint and READ it. Then try to find a first edition for investment value.

Lars, that's great that you got one of the 1st Editions! You are correct, that with patience you can definitely get one of the 1st Editions for under $50. The $300 BIN -- no comment.

I'm not the investing kind of person when it comes to collectibles. I'd almost certainly get one of reprints unless one of the 1st Editions shows up in a Penny Auction. Sigh... the good ol' days.

Thanks again for the suggestion!

Dear All,
With the help of Bobby and Terry, we're ready to share our thoughts with you and invite any/all responses.

How about a limit - such as a five stamp I.D. limit per contact......?

I would be willing to be the B.O.B./Revenue contact for U.S.;

To your point-I think an article like that would be a wonderful addition to our library of articles, and if it's O.K. with Terry and Bobby, we could refer to it from our site (where ever that might be.) Just check with Ralph to be certain we aren't going over old ground.

@ michael78651

I can write this guide right here:

a) read the introduction to the catalog,
b) did you really read the introduction to the catalog?
c) OK, flip to the back of the catalog and use the alphabetical index and identifier;
d) No inscription on the stamp match what is listed?

Arno

A few years ago, in our little known FAQ section I started a FAQ on stamp identification for beginners. Stamp Identification FAQ Although everything is at a fairly basic level, it covers quite a bit of ground - catalogs, paper types, perfs, watermarks etc. As a FAQ it is intended to be a shared/collaborative effort, so any ideas to enhance or improve it would be most welcome.

FCFS.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Okay, All....

I have recorded a total of 87 reference entries from a collection of 11 members. I think this is a terrific start.

I am willing to maintain the listing going forward as members want to add or delete items, and as new members want to list their libraries.

I have compiled them all in an Excel spreadsheet. My question now would be where can we put this listing to the benefit of the membership? Where do we go from here? Can someone offer a suggestion on how this can be integrated into the web site?

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Peter

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Well, I didn't get a direct answer to my question on whether we should still post the list here, but since others have subsequently posted lists, I guess that means "yes"? I'll post catalogs and books separately.

Here are the catalogs:

ACS New Zealand Stamps (2010)
Afinsa Portugal (2009)
Aland Post (2010)
Alex Kazakhstan (2010 and 2010-2011 supplements)
Alex Uzbekistan (2007)

Australia Non-Denominated and Flat Rate Postal Stationery (2007)
Brookman US, UN, & Canada Stamps & Postal Collectibles (1997)

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

For the benefit of all members, the inquiry should be responded to within the thread on the discussion board.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

The full title is actually "Album Weeds or How to Detect Forged Stamps". So it is a book on early forgeries. It was compiled in 1882, so it only covers the early forgeries.

Kelly, keeping your upcoming surgery in prayer -- get well first!

Oh that's perfect. I was stuck looking at the categories of Catalogues, Forgeries, General Reference and thinking huh? LOL Thanks for clarifying that.

And thank you for the prayers for next week. Every prayer is needed Happy

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

The catalogs have the advantage of weight, but the stamps have the overwhelming numbers...

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Kim, you are correct that the price quoted is for the reprint, but the value is in the content! Having said that, with a bit of patience and persistence you may also be able to add a first edition to your library for not much more. There are 550 out there to be had! (I own #471 of 550). Buy-It-Now on eBay is $300 (or best offer) with FREE shipping for #51 of 550. What a deal!!!

But seriously, get the reprint and READ it. Then try to find a first edition for investment value.

re: Developing a Library of Catalogues and Reference Work

Lars, that's great that you got one of the 1st Editions! You are correct, that with patience you can definitely get one of the 1st Editions for under $50. The $300 BIN -- no comment.

I'm not the investing kind of person when it comes to collectibles. I'd almost certainly get one of reprints unless one of the 1st Editions shows up in a Penny Auction. Sigh... the good ol' days.

Thanks again for the suggestion!
