I don't collect them, but I have a few thousands of them that I would like to trade for something on my want lists.
Mike
I have some that I try to identify and usually keep, but I don't collect them per se.
Hi all
I do have two perfin catalogues one for Great Britain and one for Australia,so if anyone wants any help identifying any perfins of these countries just post your scans and
I will be more than happy to try and identify them for you.
Brian
Just thinking out loud- for those who have particular catalogs and are willing to take the time to share, should we consider having a contact list that folks could access. For example, might Brian be our Perfin master for G.B. & Australia? There are some others with specialty catalogs that likewise could be a general resource(Cancels, Back of The Book, EFO's, etc)
Sound like anything we ought to explore?
Dan C.
Dan are you suggesting compiling a list using Scott numbers and other information from Scott catalogues which would appear as a catalogue listing on this website?
If so, don't do it without getting written permission in writing from Scott Publishing Co. (a division of Amos Publishing) who is the copyright owner of Scott catalogues.
Liz
Hi Liz
I think what Dan means is to compile a list of names of people who have specialized catalogues that other members can call on for help.
For instance I have The Tomkins Catalogue of Identified GB perfins ,now if one of our members has a GB perfin they want identifying They can post it up and I will check my cat.to see if I can Identify it.
Brian
GREAT IDEAS and SUGGESTIONS ! Maybe this opened us up to something new.
I think Dan's idea is excellent. Dan, you should open a topic under "Philatelic Catalogues and Literature Discussion" titled something like, "Availble Catalogs" or something similar. Snowy is correct, it is not a violation of copyright laws to share information as long as nothing is reprinted without permission, and identifying who has which catalog merely points a member in the correct direction to ask his/her question.
Bobby
Liz, you are right to protect us from copyright infringement, but Dan is suggesting something else, free of criminal intent.
The value of Dan's suggestion lies in the catalogue owners' willingness to delve into their reference libraries to answer questions.
That puts the onus, then, on the seeker, although it requires someone to compile the information that we assume others will take the time to supply. Haven't seen a volunteer emerge on this one yet.
David
Dear Bobby, Brian, Olepappy,
Care to connect together offline to work out some details to get this underway? If so, drop me an email at cohendaniel64@yahoo.com. We'll hammer out some more suggestions, tie it with a ribbon, and get back on to this board to see what the folks think. Sound like a plan?
Dan C.
Not to be a wet blanket, this could open up a whole ball of wax that is not be the original intent.
As we have all seen, here on SOR, someone will ask a question about a stamp and then the next thing you know, BAM, here's a list of 10 or 20 stamps that need identifying.
While Bobby's idea is a good, viable option, we do have the "Can you help identify this" topic in the DB that seems to serve the purpose of helping others with stamp identity problems.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind helping anyone identify a stamp, but don't want to help identify their entire collection, at least not on-line. I have many different catalogues that I use and am willing to use them to help others, even though my catalogs are not any of the "specialized" variety, they mostly show all of the stamps issued and not just the first stamp of a set, as Scott does. I will be happy to join this endeavor and list my "collection" of stamp catalogs, towards the assistance of other members.
Mike
Dani,
i think it is a good suggestion to explore. Mods, can we move the suggestion and related discussion to the Club Business area to discuss it.
Alyn
Mike,
I think the caution is well worth the mentioning. I was thinking along the lines of letting our members know that there are many catalogs available, and here are the folks to talk to about their catalog. Certainly one need not feel obligated to spend an inordinate amount of time with any questioner-just enough to get them going in the right path. I agree that the I.D. section ought to cover specific stamp requests.
Your point about our discussions going far afield at times is quite accurate. Feel free to jump on board in a private email to me. Bobby is already there and we're laying out the outline going forward.
Dan
Dear Alyn,
I understand the desire to get it off this locale-that's why I thought hammering out details ought to be continued off-line between those willing to consider it. Your suggestion about the Business Board is interesting. Once we have it in some kind of shape for consideration, perhaps that ought to be our 'hang-out' spot. To be continued
Dan C.
Two points.
First;
Yes. discussions go afield as different minds work in different areas, so unless we appoint a "Topic Coordinator Caudillo" to monitor discussions and take posters to task. I have seen that happen and the result in/on another discussion board, one that I, and I bet some others, no longer visit.
I can live with the digression despite noticing that it gets far afield at times.
Second:
The list should have a note/disclaimer reminding those who use it that it is a effort to help them find something, more or less themselves and not a place to dump every question that crosses their minds. The wording would have to be smoothed out so as to not scare newbies away, but still prevent abusive behavior, especially inadvertent over use.
Third;
(Which just dawned on me.)
The program could be started with a specific time limit at which the members involved could decide if it was worth the effort. (Three months, six months, 200 days, whatever.)
Sorry Dan - I misunderstood your first posting.
Liz
How about a limit - such as a five stamp I.D. limit per contact......?
I would be willing to be the B.O.B./Revenue contact for U.S.;
I have a Scott Specialized, a Streamside catalog for fish and game stamps (by state),
a Troutman State Revenue Stamp Catalog and a few other misc. helpful books along the same vein.
B.O.B. is my passion - especially revenues!
We just need to let people know to be patient with their queries - some of us still work full-time and it might take a little while to reply.
Randy
Excellent stuff Randy- could you post it in our list following the category headings? If not, I'll mess around with it to get it in.
Nice going.
Dan C.
....done!
Will be MORE THAN GLAD to do whatever I can.
Dear All,
Check out the listing on the business board to continue this thread. Feel free to jump in with listings, comments, observations and suggestions. Al most welcome.
Dan C.
As to the original question, I do have a special interest in perfins. I collect them when I can. I don't have a separate collection of them. I add them in with my others because I like to show different cancellations. I do get kinda excited when I get a perfin.
I do collect Irish perfins - it is so much fun to find a new one! I bought an awesome "catalog/list" of all known Irish perfin varieties from the perfin club for a really reasonable amount - less than $10. The club has pages printed for many other countries.
Also --- Not sure if I can mention this here --- but I do have an accumulation of perfins from other countries which I do not collect. I would be happy to trade for Irish perfins. Private message me here in SOR if interested.
And I collect Canadian perfins ...a modest collection message me if you want Cheryl
I have one good catalog for Imperial Russia and the Russian P O abroad (by Dick Scheper), and one Handbook for Bosnia and Herzegovina (1878-1918) - there You have very good description of perfins from this countries.
From time-to-time, when purchasing small collection here in Israel, there is some perfins that I put "aside", and later offer for sale.
From my experience, Russian ad Egypt are very low in quantity, but Austro-Hungaria, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia - there is lot of it.
best regards
Milco
Hi Dan C,
Although I am a member of the Perfin Society in the USA I don't have a catalog so cannot help but as the old saying goes "I may not know, but I now a man who does". But on a similar type of specialized subject I collect Precancels of USA and have all the catalogues just in case someone has a problem with identifying precancels.
