Early issues from Paraguay have the letters U.P.U. printed on them. Are these issues known as being part of the U.P.U. or did they show this as being members of the Congress that they joined in 1881? Also, issues from a few other countries seem to have issues like this.
Working on a master want list so I can start buying these issues.

re: Paraguay: Universal Postal Union Issues

Many countries issue stamps commemorating their membership in UPU, the international governing body of all things postal. We often find increases in these issues around the quarter century anniversay of the traty in 1874. There are also many dedicated UPU Ccollectors.

Paraguay did, in fact, join the Universal Postal Union on July 1, 1881. You might also look for stamp sets issued in 1949 from all countries around the world, which was the 75th anniversary of the UPU. These 75th anniversary issues are probably the most prized collectables for those collectors interested in UPU topicals.

If you are not already aware of this, the Freestampcatalogue has the U.P.U. as a topical heading. It's not exhaustive, but might throw up some more stamps for your want list.
