Stamps from Bhutan were long considered to be just colorful stickers but then collectors interest began to build up and now it is a very collectible country. I did have a lot of Bhutan stamps in the past but was conned out of them by some dealer at a stampshow here in my hometown - all of them were authentic postally used stamps, which are as rare as they come!
In the past outgoing mail from Bhutan was carried to Kolkata, India from where it was loaded on planes for international destinations. I did have a few covers mailed to me in UAE this way from Kolkata dealers. These 3D, Vinyl Record, Golg Foil, Silver Foil stamps were bought at very low bulk price from Bhutan Post for collectors by stamp dealers but then some stamp dealers of Kolkata started taking advantage of this leniency and were mailing packages to their customers with Bhutan stamps through the system which was helping Bhutan Postal Services in their outgoing mails. This caused a lot of revenue loss to India Post and it was discontinued.
I have no current information on this - it is probably still going on so if you order something from Kolkata dealers and ask them to use Bhutan stamps they may still do so.
Getting postally used covers of Bhutan with stamps is a big challenge even here in India also these days a mint collection is also not easy to build up as the older items are all gobbled up by collectors.
Keep a lookout for these philatelic gems of Bhutan, these have done wonders in advancing philately as they attract more youngsters to the hobby.
I didn´t know that Bhutanese stamps had gaines popularity but I must admit that when I came across an Indian dealer (on facebook) who offered covers and postcards sent from Bhutan, I hastily made a little exchange with him because I considered mail sent from Bhutan to be quite scarce. This is just to tell Saleem that it still happens
Excellent cover Peter - I believe that these days the mail is carried out on international flights from Thimphu itself unlike earlier system when it was forwarded to Kolkata, India.
I´m not sure if it goes directly from Thimphu but considering the fact that it only took a week to reach, I guess you´re right there Saleem
Btw, it´s a postcard which unfortunately doesn´t have any text
Bhutan, with its different types and uniqueness of stamps, coupled with its remoteness, has appealed to many stamp collectors. It is a popular area to collect. If you haven't seen it, Bhutan has an interesting web site that includes a discussion of their stamps, country and culture. Several nice videos to watch too.
