Hi Everyone,
As we go on we recognize the milestones in Stamporama as they come and go, but we missed this one. I just realized that we recently passed the milestone for having 1800 active members. Jerry would be pleased. On our home page where we list the number of members in the number of states and provinces etc, the member count is a real time count. As Perry accepts new members, this count is updated.

Regards ... Tim.

Mr Auld:

How do you determine if a membership is "active"?

A person is Active if they have passed the scrutiny of our esteemed membership secretary and have been accepted into our family.

Tim,
I thought maybe he meant actively participating in SOR, as opposed to just signing up to be a member of SOR. A lot of people obviously read the Discussion board, but never make a comment, or have never bought or sold a stamp, so would they be considered ACTIVE members? Or just a member in name only and have never dropped out, which I don't know how one could cancel their membership, anyway. The ones that bug me are the ones that will answer NO, that they do not want to "communicate" with anyone. What's up with that. Why would anyone join an organization and not want to communicate?

To me, an active member would be someone who logs in to check out what's happening.

A Service Dog gives a person with a disability independence. Never approach, distract or pet a working dog, especially when (s)he is in harness. Never be afraid to ask questions to the handler (parent).

Mike,

Maybe just a fluke thing but a number of years ago when the website was redesigned, my membership account was deleted. I hadn't logged in for a while before that happened and when I did, my name was still in the directory but we couldn't access it. I had to re-apply and then after that my old membership was deleted. Strange doings.

I think for some who might say no to correspondence is that maybe they don't have any interest in trading at the time and assume correspondence refers to trades. I'm not sure if I have mine set that way right now or not. I still message friends on the site but since I really don't have much interest in trading as I have little to offer and limited needs right now, with the exception of a couple of regular trading partners I don't like to be contacted about trades.

I would love to correspond with people who have the same collecting areas as I have but I think that fits more into the idea of a discussion group on topics (as was recently raised in another thread).

I think we might have more "active" members if we did have sub-group discussions such as they have the "study groups" in various other clubs, etc.

I'm really looking forward to seeing a discussion area where we can divide it into groups. I know I would find myself reading the discussions on areas I don't collect as well.

Anyway, I've gone off topic here - lol

Membership entitles the new member to be active or just a browser. No stipulation should be made in order to be a member as long as the new member follows the rules of the group. Usually I ask new members to introduce themselves in the discussion section but it is not a requirement. I like the idea of having spin-off groups, like UK collectors or US collectors having a forum to talk about their collections and what they're looking for, etc, etc. Perry

Perhaps we could take a periodic "roll call", say every couple of years or so, where a member would have to log in within a specific period of time to validate membership, with those not responding being deleted (gasp!) from Stamporama.

This wouldn't prove anything but it might satisfy those members who have a passion for (damned) statistics. As for me, I live in the metric world where "milestones" have no application.

I don't see how a regimented system (roll calls) and the like would help the members in any way, it would just create more work for the powers that be, an old saying is 'If it's not broken don't fix it'
