For all those collectors who are into Olympic stamps,I thought you may like to see the full set of GB gold Medal winners stamps for 2012.
I managed to get these on my recent trip to the UK.They were issued in peel& stick sheetlets ,the kind postmaster at the tiny village of Stoguersey in Somerset cut one from every sheetlet for me.

re: GB Olympic gold medal winners

And the search continues for a decent postally used example of each one.

The allure of collecting postally used is not just that often issues will only cost the labor of separating the stamp from the paper. It is also that it is often quite a challenge. And at times when some philatelic anomally occurs that presents us with an elusive variation not only do nice postally used examples become more difficult to acquire, they trade on the open market for more than mint specimens.

It will take me several months to find all thirty UK Olympics and eventually be happy with their condition but I'll eventually have them all in my UK album and often a second complete set in th Olympics topical album as well along with most of the rest of the world's Olympic stamps.

It looks pretty nice, Brian.
.
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter,
And make believe it came from you.

I'm gonna write words oh so sweet,
They're gonna knock me off my feet,
Ad put some kisses, on the bottom,
I'll be glad I got 'em.

I'm gonna smile and say,
I hope you're feelin' better,
I'll close with love the way you do.
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And I'm gonna make believe it came from you.

Ah, but would that not amount to the stamps being CTO? Yes, they saw postal duty, but for a philatelic purpose.

CTO would be placing a value on such items. If hat was the intent he may not have paid for the stamps and then send them to himself. I don't think that the entire purpose of sending tihis item in this situation would really constitute placing a value on it. THE LOVE OF THE HOBBY...

re: GB Olympic gold medal winners

My understanding of these terms and situations.

CTO = Cancelled to Order. Cancelled either during the printing process or immediately thereafter before being sold on the open market.

Remainders = Stamps cancelled in bulk by the post office so that the are no longer available to be used on mail.

Handback = Favor Canceled = Cancelled at the post office and returned to the collector either to get a clear example of the cancellation or to create a nicely cancelled stamp for the collection.

Controlled mail or cancellation = Stamps used on an envelope or parcel and mailed to ones self or to someone who will return the cover or the torn corner to the sender, something that I do with X-mas presents and birthday presents to my grand children to generate postally used examples for my collections. Frequently this mail may not contain actual mail.

Philatelic mail = Usually attractive stamps used by collectors or dealers, often from the discount postage pile, on mail being sent to someone who is thought likely to appreciate the courtesy.

Finally Postally Used = Stamps from normal mail which paid the fee for delivery of some communication or item.

I don't believe stamps on cover sent thru normal postal routing can ever be considered 'CTO'

CTO's are cancelled then handed back or sold (off-cover) before ever seeing postal use.
