Thanks!!!

I find Pat's Egyptian stamp interesting. I always thought that Great Britain was the only country that didn't print the country's name on their stamps. I can't see any country name on this stamp.
Regards ... Tim.
Michael - as a new collector, I'm curious. How did you identify the Egyptian stamp? Had you seen it before or did something about it tip you off?
Lisa, I have been a world wide collector since 1962. Fifty years (oy!) experience is the teacher for me. I can recognize most stamps in a second or less as relates to country of origin and general time period. To answer questions like these, it takes me a little longer to look up the actual catalog number!
For the Egyptian stamp in question, I instantly recognized the design and King Fuad. Also, if you look at the cancel, you will see that the stamp was canceled in Cairo.
Stamps, even without the country name can tell you alot.
Tim, there are many countries that have issued stamps without putting their name on the stamp. The identifier at the back of the Scott catalogs will show you several, including Greece, Mongolia, and even recent stamps from Serbia & Montenegro. Saudi Arabia puts the royal crest on the stamps without a name. The Linns Stamp Identifier will show you even more, such as Italy, Montenegro,Switzerland, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Venezuela and Yugoslavia (Bosnia & Herzegovina). Well, I could add more, but you get the picture. It is a convention of the Universal Postal Union for stamps to bear the country name, but not all adhere to it all the time.
Thanks Michael. I appreciate the explanation. One learns something new on this discussion board everyday.
Regards ... Tim.
Very well put, Michael....
....and a perfect example how the Linn's identifier can be a great help - I use it all the time and I don't even collect WW!
Randy
I'm having trouble with this stamp. I don't even have a guess. Maybe Iran?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
