I would go after mint C1 through C6, and mint set of the 1901 Pan Americans, a nice clean 524, a mint 573 and a mint J78a. According to my 2009 catalog, that puts me at exactly $1000 SCV.
What would you pick?

I would pick Scott #287, Cattle in Storm. 2013 value is $1000 for unused.

On a more obscure note, I would probably pick Confederate states 57XU3 E1 10c on 5c black $1,000, for a couple of reasons. First for the multiple historical value, since Georgia was part of the Confederacy and Milledgeville was the first capital of Georgia, second I like overprints and I also was born a Yankee, but love the Confederate history. 
Hang on to your Confederate money, the South will rise again!!!!

I also thought about a nice cancelled U.S. #1 and some mint Columbians.
I too have a Baby Zep and think the SCV listed at $55 is a bit low. I could use my winnings to speculate on 19 copies and hope a few of the ones I get are MNH.
I would love to get the entire Zep set of 3, but I would have to win a few contests...

The old Washingtons are a very nice choice! It helps that he was a good looking fellow!
The Black Jack is nice, but I think it's popularity is due to the clever nickname! I prefer the design of the #69.
I am sure you can find a nice classic in the $60 area.

Well, Thom, Scott lowered the value of the Baby Zep to $50.00 in the 2013 catalog.
#17 is now $260.00
#37 = $375.00
#69 = $100.00
#73 = $65.00
You now have more money to buy that other stamp.
You'll the US has dropped 10% to 20% overall in the 2013 catalog.
If you collect Australia, you'll find that almost every stamp has increased in value.

Not surprised, judging from the slow market as illustrated monthly in Linns. Corrections reflect reality, and I can deal with reality better than I can with a SCV value that no one will pay in the market!
Guess I may be able to pick up a few more items in my $1000 sweepstakes!

Ah the US zepps, C13-15. mnh. What a ride these stamps have had since 1981 when they reached the top selling price. I do not remember the top selling price, but I think they averaged around $!0,000.00 a set.
If one would have read the stamp papers, and noted all the different dealers selling these stamps, they might have realized that there was no shortage of these zepps, and instead of throwing their money out, had just purchased the classics instead, they would be ahead of the game, instead of sitting on three stamps on which they will never recoup the 10 grand they spent. At that time, I sent out a news letter to all my customers warning them not to buy at these inflated prices.
Prices are low now, around $2200.00, so if you really want these stamps, they can be had, and most everyone can get them. there are plenty to go around. Just buy well centered, and good condition. Pay a bit less for hinged.
Just to not go out to a restaurant to eat for a few months, no movies, or shows, or other entertainment, eat a little less, and watch your pennies, and before you know it you will have enough saved to buy these stamps. Just remember, the food you eat, the entertainment you see will be gone, but once you buy these stamps, they will be there to see, and hold, and enjoy, as long as you want to keep them.
PS: Collect for enjoyment, not for profit.

Gentlemen, thank you. Richaard, I esp. appreciate what you say re. enjoyment. An older dealer helped mentor me and he continually reminded me about that saying, "buy what you like." He often scoffed at purchasing for prestige. He put up with me when I was young and had a very limited budget.

Okay, let's pretend you won $1000 in Scott catalog value to select choice U.S. stamps in VF or better condition. Out of all the U.S. issues, what stamps would you select? Would you pick too or three issues cataloging at several hundred dollars, or get several lower priced sets you always wanted to complete?
