LOL ... that is a good one Liz. From one extreme to the other. Usually, the envelopes that you send me have no cancellation on them at all, which has often made me think that Canada Post must think that their stamps will just disintegrate if you try to remove them in order to reuse them.

Commiserations.
I have shared your pain.

I used to be able to get my stamps hand cancelled, but for some reason none of my 2 post offices here has received the 2012 hand canceller from back east

Lee - We've had the same rubber cancellation stamp here for a few years. They just change the date on the canceller every day and leave it sitting on the counter with a stamp pad for any customer to use, if they want the special Salt Spring Island cancellation put on their mail. If you ask real nicely the clerks will even put a rubber band around the envelopes with a little piece of paper that is printed 'Philatelic Mail' tucked in under the rubber band. I would like to bring the cancellation stamp home and clean out all the gummed up ink that has accumulated in the design of the stamp but I don't think they would allow me to tamper with their materials or remove them from government property.
For 'special' mailings I often take in some cut up sheet protectors, my roll of tape and scissors and cover the stamps I cancel with protection so it's almost impossible for the stamps or souvenir sheets to get totally damaged by some postal worker carrying a black pemanent marker during transit.

I found the following hand designed cancellation in some kiloware and had a good chuckle. I wish I had the whole card that this was put on.
I collect the special pictorial cancels from communities across Canada...Some of the post mistresses and post masters have been very kind and even sent messages. wishing me well......one in particular refused to cancel my return postcard because I had not made my request in French...for the most part my quest has been rewarding....Several stamporama members have been very helpful as well...Cheryl
I hate it when I get stamps that they just scribbled over with a pen. A post mark can be interesting, a pen scribble is just ugly. Ugh!
I received four envelopes today & all the stamps were demolished thanks to a diligent Canada Post postal worker making sure these stamps were cancelled by hand
