Europe/Other : Austria 530 3g on cover

I recently obtained a gem, an Austria Scott #530 3g "Costumes" stamp on a commercial cover. And not just a cover, but censored cover!

After years of searching, I had decided that the simply didn't exist on cover, and in fact seems to be quite difficult to obtain off cover. It's the low value in a set of 26 definitives, so you would think that it would be as common as beans and worth minimum catalogue value, but it's not. My elderly Scott catalogue (1986!)* gives a used value of 60 cents.

A few years ago, I received a surprise gift from Roy Lingen — a 3g on an oh-so-philatelic cover, but at least it was a cover and proof that it really did exist on cover! But a commercial cover eluded me until just a couple of weeks ago, when Roy offered one on eBay. One other collector wanted it, and the bidding went from my initial $9 offer to the winning $33, a bargain as far as I'm concerned. Here's the cover:

Nice, eh?

After that long preamble, can someone please check a recent Scott catalogue and tell me what the current value of the stamp is? I'd also like to know the value of a complete set of mint stamps, which is something I'd like to start working on.

Thanks very much,

Bob

* I think perhaps I ought to buy a new set of catalogues. There's a practical reason why I haven't. I have a fair amount of trouble with arthritis in my hands, and the 1986 set of catalogues is much smaller, physically, and thus easier to handle, than the newer, larger volumes. But meds are helping with the pain, and it certainly would be nice to get out of the dark ages as far as catalogues go.

Bob,

I see the 3g stamp as Scott 520 in the 2012 catalogue. 530 is the 45g stamp. The 3g stamp has a $0.70 Mint - $0.45 Used value. The full set is $294.85 MNH - $62.50 MH - 18.35 Used. This set is described as having Toned Paper and Yellowish Gum.

There is also a subset of this series on White Paper and Flat White Gum with the same numbers but an "a" suffix (3g is not part of this set). Total SCV is $62.35 MNH - $15 MH - $14.50 Used

Thanks, Bob.

Slip of the keyboard there — #520 it is. It's obvious that I need a new catalogue. My 1986 antique Scott describes the original 1948-1952 set as having greyish paper with yellowish gum, and doesn't mention the gum of the 1958-59 re-prints.

A friend of mine has both sets (used only) complete. I've never examined mine closely enough to determine what I have.

I'm not much for postal history but I do collect Austria. This is a nice piece!
Not even sure I have the 3g stamp. I have a ton of the "costumes" issues I have to sort through, but in every mixture I buy, the 3g is not usually present!

I was lucky, I picked up two of her in a mixture a couple of years ago on eBay. I think I got two different printings too! Happy

Some low-value stamps are difficult to get used, or on cover. It's often the case that they were issued to pay a seldom-used or short-era rate.

When working on my used KGVI Commonwealth collection, if I find I'm having difficulty finding a particular cheapie stamp, I look up to see what rate it paid.

Parkinlot says the 3g is not part of the white paper issue, but I seem to have that one. Both my stamps were scanned together side-by-side.

My 2012 Michel lists the 3g stamp at 0.80 Euros mint and 1 Euro used. Complete set mint(34 stamps) is 340 Euros and used, 19 Euros. I collect Austria and admire Austrian stamps because of the beautiful engraving on many issues. Prices for between-wars stamps are very high but the stamps are really worth it.
