Hello friends!

In my Great Britain Collection I have a curious stamp, is the number Scott 33, but it appears to be different plate numbers either Side - 104 / 194. I think that is 194 and my question is what happened with the other side?, interesting for me.

I agree with Bob and David;

it kind of looks like a zero there, but it is definitely a nine.

Sometimes these penny reds can be tricky! I've been straining my eyes looking at them for years....!

re: GB 1p Stamp - Plate 194 or 104?

Rodolfo, Hello.

I am not an expert in GB stamps at all, so I can only offer general comments. At least I want to try inching towards answering your question (which, from my reading, was not primarily whether the plate number is a 104 or 194).

The One Penny red is a very popular stamp, and especially collecting its various plate numbers is very common. I know at least two collectors in my local stamp club who collect these plate numbers. Now, my conjecture, given that it is a well researched stamp and a lot of literature exists, if this is a constant plate flaw, I'd be confident that it has been written up somewhere in the literature (i.e., "constant 104/194 plate number error at position S-A."). For starters, someone may check the US Classic catalog, which I believe lists the plate numbers, or even better the specialized SG catalog, or yet better any handbook on this stamp. I don't have any of these references.

If it is not described, it probably is just a random variation. By chance, some printing ink pixels are present or absent just in the right places to make the nine appear as a zero.

I see two plate numbers....#194 stands out but the top number is iffy! Perry
