I'm very pleased that Perry put this posting up on our board. We have no desire to be exclusive in any way, but we do want to make sure as much as humanly possible, that the people who join us are as they claim, interested in philatelic endeavors, and there intention is not to defraud us in any way or otherwise cause havoc. It is a difficult and time consuming job that Perry has undertaken to do for us, and he does it very well as can be seen by the few times that we have had intentionally fraudulent people to deal with.
Well done Perry.
Tim.
I second that Well Done

Well done, indeed!
It's nice to know that people are actually somewhat "screened" before they get onboard. I, for one, have not had a SINGLE "Nigerian money scam" incident since I've been a member of SOR! :-D
OK... so a small jab at some other stamp "forums" I've been on.
Love this place!
~Peter
Mr. Kenneth Perry:
Thank you for posting this "insightful" information, and permit me to commend you for your industry. Your screening process for Stamporama is more thorough than what I was subjected to when I joined the Canadian Army! I appreciate the time (it must be an awful lot) and expertise (unbounded) you contribute to our stamp club.
John Derry
Hear! Hear!-Well said John. Perry at the gate, David at the helm and Tim at the ready with his magic wand- we are indeed well blessed.
Dan C.
I'm just glad I got in before you started screening... :-) You may be retired, but there's a second career in quality control waiting for you.
Hi to All
I am one of the many, I am sure, that are happy to be a member of SOR. I live in Ireland and we do not have the same opportunities to purchase stamps as you Yanks do. I have made friends with the guys I do business with, and that is what a Club should be all about. SOR has helped me in no small way to enjoy my stamp collecting. Thank you Perry for helping to make our Club a safe place for members.
Regards
John
I could use a little bit of help from the folks applying for membership. Lately I'm getting applications in lower case only. Also PO Boxes are welcome as long as we have the actual address too, proper phone number and I'm getting bouncing email addresses. Please do not apply then get a new server...I will immediately not accept those applications. One other item is supplying a city but not the state or country is very time consuming to figure out...those applications need to be filled out properly, P L E A S E !
K. Perry
Secretary/Stamporama
I wonder if the application form could be programmed to require upper case as appropriate as well as completion of required fields.
Bob
Bob,
You make a very good point. Perry, I can help with some of these things. I can force the capital letter at the start of the word in the address and I can add more information about the phone number and email requirements. I have required fields from my point of view but haven't thought to add Perry's concerns. Sorry about that my friend. I'll contact you off line.
Regards ... Tim.
Having just become a member of StampoRoma, I feel it necessary to comment on the process.
I can understand the need for my providing a blood sample and, while a bit disconcerting, the EEG scan was not a painful process. But why in the world did you need one of my bedroom slippers? And, since you didn't specify which one, I was afraid sending the left one was a mistake that would invalidate my application.
However, I'm glad things seem to have worked out, and I look forward to both enjoying and participating in what Stamporoma has to offer.
Sincerely,
Oliver Black
Oliver,
Thanks for making me smile today. Welcome to SOR.
Grant
Dear Oliver,
Welcome to the family. Not to worry about the left slipper-it worked out fine for Cinderella, and it'll work out fine for your application. Just so you know-the need for the bodily fluids and the slipper are for our resident Wizard to fashion the proper potion protection for you and your machine. He is a Wizard most extraordinary.
You'll find that many of our members appear ordinary, but they are in reality Wizard folk. Keep tuned to the discussion group and you will see wizard speak used frequently. Are you of the extraoradinay folk, or just plain like me?
Looking forward to hearing more of you.
All good thoughts,
Dan C.
Oliver, welcome. My dog ate my right slipper and since you've lost its mate, I'll relieve you of your non-identifying footwear.
all blood samples are sent to our Transylvanian repository for safe keeping, so worry not.
Thank you for your welcome.
I noticed the "save the UPS etc" notation on a message and realized I had not thought about it from the hobby standpoint before. It does seem a timely warning. Can you imagine, as a last ditch effort to save the postal system as we know it, the printing of millions of USPS CTO's as a low overhead way of increasing revenue begins. From there it is only a short step to printing nothing else but baseball cards, sticky smileys, custom business cards and souvenir sheets.
I thought that the USPS, not to mention Canada Post, was already the primary source of anything but stamps!
boB
I think most of the "Post Offices" around the world are spreading their sales base, Australia Post sells everything from printers to programs, books to magazines, odd ornaments to pens & pencils, at least we know they will be around for a while yet.
Well teachers, trainers and lecturers need to emphasize letter writing skills and the use the stamps will grow from that.Even art students can benefit from the use of stamps.Just put a heart to the effort and some results will come. The Internet is actually helping the stamp industry. There are scans that can travel via email and the web. Each person on a day to day basis need to teach anyone and everyone how to read .Then the stamp industry will gor.Just like the petrol business, the vehicles are sold and then the petrol( oil) is bought.
On a small level I have done such efforts to some results where my sourcing people( people who live in obscure regions) have been known in their communities who supporting stamps.
Bravo to any new effort.
Kiron Manuel
Given the current influx of new members -- welcome to all of you -- I thought it might be helpful to reactivate this old topic to shed some light on the application process; read from the top.
Those coming from Bidstart will note the difference in the process of joining. Bidstart is an auction platform which had a community attached to it. Accordingly, I assume, the process of becoming a member in the Bidstart community was the same as signing up for the auction. Stamporama is a stamp club with a small member-to-member auction as part of it.
I am sure Perry is working overtime these days to get everybody approved and settled in.
Thanks again, Perry!
Arno
I've noticed lately some applicants reject the idea of having their actual address in our files, not viewable by the basic membership. This is only one source of information for me as secretary to verify location of address and IP address. Overseas applicants are very difficult to trace as I do not work for the CIA or FBI and not privy to criminal records or the such. Patience is in order for these as I try my best to approve those who I believe are true philatelists, such as members of this or that organization. Of course, we want all applicants approved, but, sometimes for the safety of the club that is not always possible. Thanks Tim for making the application process easier. For those folks who receive my initial welcome email please reply to that, do not email Stamporama, Thanks...
Perry
After I receive the application from the perspective member I correct the application with proper capitalizations, and put cities in when only the zip code is submitted. I next look at the reason the person wishes to join, if it's solely to sell a collection they inherited I send a return email to the new applicant and a copy to Dan Cohen for beginning a dialog on what they believe they have and the best way to proceed with the disposition or keeping the collection. Next I submit to the applicant a form letter requiring a "reply" in order to verify the email address is in order. After receiving the reply I look up the address on Google Earth and visually check that a building stands at that address. If a PO Box has been submitted I send another dialog to the applicant as to the reason for the PO Box, such as living with the caribou or no mail service to their igloo or jungle hut. I then can trace the IP address to verify the location of the server to establish actual location, unless I'm dealing with an underworld CIA agent who is smarter than our Tim. If worse comes to worse I use the old fashioned Bell service, I call on the phone, With these few checks I use intuition to accept or reject. If I feel rejection may be necessary I discuss it with the web masters. Since we want all legitimate stamp collectors to share in our club, unless you are a member of the Bloods or Cripes or some other criminal element, you'd be welcome into our family.
K. Perry
Secretary/Stamporama
P.S. Sometimes I'm a little slow on the draw as I'm old and a tad retarded but I try hard as I can to see you get the attention you deserve.
