Hi Mark,
The program will work out the first posting in a thread that you haven't viewed and will position you at that point in the discussion. Normally the first posting that you haven't view will be positioned at the top of the screen. The quickest way to get to the top of the thread to start reading from there is to press the Home key on your keyboard.
Regards ... Tim.
Thanks Tim,
That's how I figured it should work, but it actually doesn't. For example, I opened a 22 post thread which I had never, ever read before. It took me straight to the bottom, with a slight thud. :)
However, the home key tip worked well. I shall look away till the screen hits bottom then use the home key!
Mark
Hi Mark
What browser (and version) are you using?
Regards. Tim
It is happening to me too. FireFox 9.0.1
Tim,
I use IE8, and I find that the board works exactly as you say as long as I bother to log in before clicking on a topic If I just click on the discussion board and then immediately go to topics I interested in I'll land on the most recent post first. I don't see this as a problem, just suggesting this may be the reason others are going to last post first.

Tim,
I have been having the exact same problem where the anchor does not work, I go to the bottom of the page. Using Firefox 3.6.17 on Xubuntu Linux.
Thanks,
Josh
Im using Firefox 9.01 - When I am logged in and go to the Discussion it jumps to the bottom of the page and shows me the last posting, which is fine with me. As a Moderator I get every posting on the Discussion Board so I have read all the previous posts of any subject.

Hi Michael & Liz
There is an update to Firefox 10 online, use your browser, go to HELP at the top of your browser page, then click on ABOUT FIREFOX, then click on CHECK FOR UPDATES.
I am not sure if this will help but it can't hurt, 10 seems a little faster
Blessings
Larry
HI Tim,
I use Chrome ver. 16.0.912.77 m
Mark
Another upgrade already? WOW
Usually I get a notice when there's an upgrade available.
I'm now using Version 10 :)
Thanks Larry.
Yes, from 9 to 10 was a very quick period of time. I am now using FireFox 10. Thanks, Larry.
There weren't enough new posts to see if the listing of new posts problem is resolved with version 10.
Hi Mark,
Well ... you get the prize for the hardest bug to fix in the discussion board so far. :-)
This was a nasty little one, it was quite hard to find. I think I have a fix for it, but I want to do a lot more testing before I put up on the SOR site. Probably a night or two more. Thanks for reporting it.
OK, this is how it will work. The very first time you look at a thread it will open up the thread at the top (the first message in the thread). If you go out and look at something else and then come back to it, it will position you at the bottom of the thread, expecting you to want to reread the most recent postings. After you looked at the thread Liz posts a response, then David posts one and then Lasaboy posts a response. When you next come back to the thread it will position you at Liz's posting because it is the first posting on the thread that you haven't seen yet. Does that make sense?
Regards ... Tim.
yes, thanks
I think that makes sense Tim. Thanks!
I had no idea this was a custom built forum when I asked the question. I thought I had just missed a setting or something. I'm impressed by your willingness to dig into this Tim.
Mark
Hi Mark et al,
I believe I have this bug fixed. It works as I described above:
1. Very first time into a thread, it will position at the very first posting in the thread, assuming that you want to start at the beginning.
2. Second time in the thread, with no further postings added to the thread, it will position at the bottom of the thread on the last message posted, assuming that you wish to read the most recent postings.
3. As other people post on the thread and you come back to the thread to read their postings, it will position on the first posting that you haven't read.
If you aren't currently logged into the website, the program uses your IP address to identify you and hence can tell what you have read and what you haven't read and so should behave as described above. The exception to this rule will be either when your high speed internet provider changes your IP address or if you connect via a dialup connection by phone, in which case you will be given a new IP address each time you dialup. The solution to both these situations is to just log in to the website, which established who you are and all should be good.
If you have any problems or find anything that I have missed, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards ... Tim.
Tim, the corrections are working absolutely great!
Had plenty of messages with multiple new replies, and even had some new replies posted after I went through the first batch for today. Went to the correct posts each time!
Thank you!
Hi -- apologies if this is the wrong place to post this question:
For some reason, whenever I click on a conversation in the discussion board, I get taken to the last post in the thread, not the first post in the thread. So my reading sequence goes like this:
- click on a thread
- scroll up to the first post (sometimes that's a loooong scroll)
- start reading.
If I check out the thread again, same thing happens.
This is exactly opposite of how every other discussion board I use works. Is there a way for me to change this? User settings perhaps? I've looked around but can't find a way to set this as a preference.
Thanks!
Mark
