I have been thinking about this as well as I'll be posting a bunch of new stuff in the auction soon. My thoughts...
Original paper backing with no hinges is MNH
Original paper backing with hinge mark is MH
Transfered to anoter paper (had to in the case of booklets) is Not Used NH.
Incidently, what is the letter desination for Not Used? Is it NU?

The definition of "never hinged" relates only to the condition of the gum of an unused stamp. Therefore, if you use a hinge on the backing paper, you are not affecting the gum of the stamp. Therefore, the stamp remains "never hinged". If you attach a stamp to your album by affixing a hinge only to selvage that is attached to the stamp, the stamp remains "never hinged". If a stamp was issued without gum, the "never hinged" term does not apply, although most do use it anyway, because there is no gum to disturb by the application of a hinge to a stamp without gum.
" ... If not, then how would one describe a stamp that had never been either postally used or cancelled, having intact undisturbed gum and showing no evidence of having been hinged? ..."
Hahahaha
Being interested in Postally Used, only, I am enjoying this discussion.

ultimately the answer is to change the definition of what is a mint condition stamp if a mint stamp needs to be collected with its backing paper.
in cases where terminology has not kept pace with technology, it's probably best to stick to descriptive terms until terms have been agreed on, e.g., "on original backing paper unhinged/hinged".
If one were to affix a self adhesive stamp to an album page using a standard hinge on the backing sheet, wouldn't the stamp itself still be considered mint never hinged?
If not, then how would one describe a stamp that had never been either postally used or cancelled, having intact undisturbed gum and showing no evidence of having been hinged?
Hmmmm....
