re: "TEST" ... is it added by recipient, sender, or USPOD

The sender, I would think. (The original sender, that is – H.C. Brooks.) It's hard to imagine the USPOD marking a business reply piece in this fashion, and what test would this Isbell person be running? But Brooks might be interested in speed of return, location of person returning, and the like, for marketing purposes.

PS: What is the handwritten word under "TEST?" It looks like "cure," which seems odd. Interesting cover.

H. C. Brooks was a medical device or appliance company. Theey sold an item to support a hernia or rupture.

The "TEST" probably indicated that the envelope had included a testamentary letter about the use of the device.

It appears that the green date stamped at the top is in the same ink as the word “test”. Looks like it took three days to travel through the mail stream. No idea why that would be important or what the ink numbers/word above and below “test” would mean - some internal company code perhaps

"Test"amentary.... interesting. And there is a letter enclosed that talks about the cured hernia

thanks to all who have submitted opinions, and, for once, all indicating the same opinion.

I hope this is not overkill....

After a search on eBay for "H C Brooks" I found the following

Item 1, advertisement from 1944

Image Not Found

Item 2, another from 1917

Image Not Found

Next, one with a "TEST"amentary letter

Image Not Found

Finally, they advertised INTERNATIONALLY.

I did not include the direct links as these will not be there long, but I suspect that five years from now, a collector can make the same search and find similar listings .

Overkill? Hardly; it's a great addition to the question and answers. Pleased you did that. With my two enclosures, my piece might be commanding bitcoin prices.

amsd:

Please scan and post your enclosures. I saw some of the eBay listings with the contents showing their inserts, but didn't try to capture and post everything.

I think others would enjoy seeing the actual mailed advertising materials.
