I have put together a short (short is, of course, all relative) video tutorial introducing ChromaMate, illustrating how to match stamp colours against a custom colour library.
Unfortunately, my video production skills leave much to be desired, so please bear with me.

ChromaMate software for comparing and matching colours in images.
Please feel free to download the pre-release version of ChromaMate here: https://www.thestampweb.com/ChromaMate
It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and, of course, it's free.
The pre-release version is mostly complete and should be bug free. The most significant omission is a lack of documentation. However, after it is installed, the "Getting started" section of the help text accessed via the Help button on the main toolbar should provide enough information to get started.
I am hoping to have the release version out in the next week or two.
Please note, however, that since the software is freeware and has not been digitally signed, both Windows and macOS will display warnings that it is from an unknown developer and may be potentially dangerous. I have, however, taken extreme care to ensure that it is completely virus-free, including scanning it with multiple virus scanners before release.
You may therefore need to temporarily adjust your computer's security settings to allow the installation.
As noted by others in the "It is way past time for some software engineer to write a stamp identification piece of software" thread, colour is a complete can of worms. Monitors are different, scanner sensors are different, different catalogues use different colour standards, and colours are not even consistent across different postal authorities from the same publisher.
Although ChromaMate hasn't addressed all these issues, I hope it has addressed enough to be useful.
ChromaMate utilises the CIEDE2000 algorithm, which has been specifically designed to model the human eye for accurate colour comparison. Matching is performed between the stored image, regardless of how the image is displayed on the screen, and a colour library, thereby removing the screen from the equation.
When first installed, ChromaMate includes a library containing the standard web colours for getting started. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, I am unable to include an actual scanned colour key from SG or Scott. Also, to minimise the scanner's effect, the library should ideally be created from images scanned on the same scanner as the images to be matched.
One does not have to scan a whole colour key to get started. For example, I collect 1/2d green Rhodesian doubleheads, which are listed with multiple shades of green. I have identified the different shades, scanned these and added them to my "doublehead" library. Now, when I want to identify a 1/2d green doublehead, I can simply match it against this library and choose the closest match.
If anyone does install the pre-release version and encounters any bugs or has suggestions for improving the program, I would appreciate it if you could get in touch with me.
