These can frequently be something as simple as a fire in a collection box (certain elements of society think it's funny to drop a cigarette butt into a post box).
Here are a few US and Canada "fire" covers from my "sold database". Some auxiliary markings give more information than others.

In 1972 a private contractor for Canada Post went on strike and in Montreal someone started a fire. Canada Post then ended the contract with the private contractor in Montreal. It was a few days later, all private contractors in the major cities in Canada had their contracts bought up by Canada Post. The contractors, employees, had the choice to become employees of Canada Post or stay with the contractor.
Canada Post had to use rented vans until it could purchase their own trucks.

According to the Postal History Corner on Canada Post there was a fire which occurred in 1972 in or near Montreal. I have a cover from Midland Ont to Scarborough dated Dec 18th 1972 with significant fire damage
There is little information listed in the Postal History Corner site. It does not specify a wreck, or cause of fire or any detail.
Do we have any collectors who can add to the mystery? Much appreciated if you can as I like to document items in my collection.
