Dave,
That's a cool item. I've been to Alaska twice; it truly is "the last frontier". May I ask where you picked that up?
Ernie
Is this a cover?
Ernie, message sent. 1899, no, it's just a piece

Just for the heck of it I looked up Alaska in my precancel catalog. There are more than I expected for Alaska, 180 towns and 310 varieties. But nothing for this particular town. Most seem to have either native names and there are several with what seems to be Russian names. This particular town was not listed. With this large number of precancels someone collecting post office cancels would have a big job and I bet many would be quite hard to find!
The Russian colonization of American got as far south as northern California.
This is the chapel from Fort Ross, a Russian outpost created in 1812. ![]()

I don't know if I've shown this before, I've had it for years.
This postmark piece is from a tiny town in Alaska, where fully two-thirds of people speak Russian as their first language, and only 1% of the population define themselves as being of American ancestry. A little piece of Russia in the USA!
