Sure way of identifying the fakes.....queen on the right is much cuter in the fakes.
These are very expensive stamps, probably at least $1000 each mint. It makes sense that most stamps like these would have fakes floating around as album fillers. In some cases the seller writes fake/reproduction/replica on the back in pen. I don't buy stuff like this on principal especially if the seller doesn't mark the stamps since there's always a risk someone will buy it as genuine at a later date. There is no way that the catalogs can acknowledge all this crap either! So always buy from someone you trust or someone who takes returns! Usually the fakes are just too good to be true and a real collector can almost always tell. I have this entire set mint and bought most of them from very reputable sources. But I'm sure most of us have a few (hopefully only a few) fakes in our collections, there's way too much of this crap out there to try to avoid. There's no sense posting all this stuff asking us what the differences are since you really have to handle the stamps to know for sure! All this is, obviously, just my opinion!
Edit: I actually did buy marked fakes once. The first page of my Newfoundland air mails has 4 out of 6 stamps as marked fakes. I also have it written in pencil on the album page. I did it this one time as a joke to "complete" my Newfoundland air mails. To my knowledge this is the only time I have done this. Later I'll post a scan of the page - if you ignore the word "fake" it really is a great looking page!
EDIT#2 I was looking at the stamps and every one is perfectly centered. None of mine are. Also some of the colours don't seem quite right. Also the perfs are so very round and perfect! Way too good to be true! I know this scan was poorly done and I've posted it before but here it is again anyway!
Found a replica lot for the whole series on E-Bay ( https://www.ebay.ca/itm/356467597986 ). Note the picture showing the word "REPLICA" on the back of the stamp. My guess is that the ones you show probably have a similar marking but it doesn't say! I wish it was always this easy to ID a fake!
what are some things to look for on this issue?
Like how were they made?
They (the originals) were engraved, perfed 12 and did not have "replica" on the back. The ones that are faked are just too perfect looking and have wonderful little round perfs that look nowhere near right. They are probably done with some kind of photographic process and really look odd to me. I would like to think if I had one to look at it wouldn't look right. But until I really have one to look at I can't say for sure. They just look too darn smooth and perfect to me! Has anyone of you actually handled one?
Are you talking about fakes when you said "They were engraved, perfed 12 and did not have "replica" on the back."?
1899....thanks for the insightful response! Why do you never expand on your comments?
Thanks for the support John. I've been trying to be really nice to 1899 and it just hasn't worked! I'm going back to my original plan and have absolutely nothing to do with any post he contributes to. It will solve a lot of my problems in the long run!
I asked a question of a poster, to me it was unclear if the poster was talking about auctual govt. stamps or fake stamp?
Hope this answers you question?
Do you know if the poster was talking about real stamps or fake stamps?
The response was "They (the originals)..."
Pretty clear?
Ooops, you are right, somehow I missed that.
Sorry all for my mistake!
This sort of fits here since I found it on E-Bay. I didn't bid high enough to get this but the tombstone cancel from Halifax NS would have made this a great item. I hope the winner appreciates it!!
