Hi everyone. I was wondering about identifying stamps with variations.

For example, if I have 50 common stamps that are the same, if there are no variations identified in the catalogue for that particular stamp, do I need to go through and measure perfs for each of them or can I just assume they are all the same and skip that step and move onto ones that do have variations listed?

I don’t know if it makes a difference or not but I’m talking about Canadian and US stamps.

Different people will tell you different things. There are those who are always looking for variations and will check everything just in case... I go by the assumption that if nothing is mentioned there is probably nothing to find. Find the way you are most content with and go with it!

To each their own.

This is one way I have found rare stamps in the past.

And these were common stamps with no variations listed?

I’m not sure which way to go. It’s interesting to see what others do.

If the catalog does not list any variants, I personally would not bother checking.

re: Identifying different perfs

I seldom look IF no differences are known, especially on perfs UNLESS it just looks funny.

That said, I found a known sheet of 50 with a FDC cancel not previously known on that sheet variety, sent it to Scott's and got it listed as a FDC. it must have stood out somehow.
