of the stamped pre-cancel or postmark is inverted. Not being a pre-cancel collector, I am curious if this oddity adds to the value of the stamp?I think it called a date precancel.

I'm not an expert either, I just like and seem to accumulate, precancels. From the dated ones I have seen and from the ones I have the date is always above the actual two bar and place name part of the precancel. I am guessing that in this case the sheet was upside down when the date was added. It would probably increase the value a bit but we're not looking at a huge rarity here. I'm not even sure what the normal version's value is but maybe add a buck or two. I might be out to lunch but I'm sure a real expert will pipe up soon. It's a nice looking stamp though!!
They were dated one at a time!

I'm not home so I cannot provide reference material request!
But using common sense, if (as you suggested) a sheet of 100 stamps all were overprinted, they would be used on one date and none other dates! I expect companies back then and today want to make money, but not lose money.

@1899 Read my comment above. I agree with you, I was wrong, you were right!! I do think it is really a bit more complicated though. Gunesch does say that dated precancels were done with hand stamps but I really think some of the later ones were done differently. I could be wrong though!!
I'm curious why you went from 1898 to 1899. Have you expanded your collection by one year? I'm not trying to annoy you, I really am curious why you changed.
@Harvey
I guess what I said before doesn't make sense to you, I'm sorry, my fault.
I will try again.
I do not have in my reference material with me.
When I do have my reference material I study it, and report back to you, in the mean time I was using common sense, again sorry!
@d1stamper
Sorry as I was using common sense in my reply!

By the way the SRC stands for Sears, Roebuck and Company. I have a small collection of dated precancels with company names including SRC and a few others. MW, Montgomery Ward, is another fairly common one. Several are mentioned in the Gunesch book and I've considered starting a collection of the different companies. The book I've mentioned a few times talks about a few of them. Does anyone have any source material that gives a "complete" list. I can't seem to find one on line ot in any of my books!
By the way, Gil, I don't have one with an upside down date. If you'd like to sell please message or email me with what you consider a fair price. If you decide to keep it why not start a collection!!!
Maybe you are confusing "Mail Order House Dated" with "Precancels with Birth Certificates"?

"Maybe you are confusing "Mail Order House Dated" with "Precancels with Birth Certificates"?"
Where you live were precancels ever used, are there any rare to look for?

In Canada 54 different precancels exist with place names and bars. When I say that I'm ignoring the fact that there are different stamps for most of the place names. I am only collecting one of each place name and of the 54 there are 6 expensive, or rare, ones. The two most expensive of these six are Amherst, Nova Scotia (only one company and two different stamps with not many of each - very rare!) with a CV of about $6000 and Sydney, Nova Scotia at $1000. There are 4 others in the mid hundreds, Carberry, Manitoba, Chatham, Ontario, Owen Sound, Ontario and Perth, Ontario. I am trying to get one only per place name and have decided not to bother with the "big six" since it is a "fun" collection for me! There are many pricey precancels that I am not counting since that particular place name comes on a cheaper stamp as well. There are also expensive inverts or double strikes, some are both! EDIT: For example, the prices for Halifax precancels run from $0.30 to $300. That is fairly typical and I go for the cheaper end when possible!
There are also 48 done by number only. I have just started looking for one of each number and only have 19 so far. As to price, I haven't really checked yet but most are reasonable. There are also early precancels done with various styles of bars with no names or numbers. I'm trying for one of each style but still have a ways to go and I think some are a bit pricey. Also many of the newer precancels are done with different numbers of bars and no place names or numbers, most are quite reasonable.
Th sum up I believe the only ones I will pass on are the big six mentioned earlier. Remember I am not looking for every precancel, just examples of each type. The cheaper examples are always preferred.
I am certainly not an expert on Canada's precancels and don't intend to be one. All prices mentioned are in Canadian Dollars since prices are taken from a book put out by Unitrade.

I plucked this #832 Precancel out of a "box lot" yesterday and noticed an oddity. Part
of the stamped pre-cancel or postmark is inverted. Not being a pre-cancel collector, I am curious if this oddity adds to the value of the stamp?
