I have a couple stamps with small pin holes. At one time either early stamp dealers or possibly even early postal workers used to sell stamps from a bunch of stamps strung on a string, almost like a stamp necklace. I am pretty sure I read that on this site. Is this a collecting plus or a huge minus? I know it is interesting but I'm sure it must significantly affect the value of the stamp. Can anyone comment on this practice and when, or if, it actually occurred?

re: a pinhole in a stamp?

You did not mention the country of the stamp in question???

I've learned that United States stamp dealers used this method (using a pin to attach stamps to a board).

Seems to me (please correct me if I'm wrong) the post office would do this nor postal workers!

re: a pinhole in a stamp?

I bought a shoebox full of Great Britain #33's back in the 80's and there were several intact strings of them threaded on black thread. A customer said it was common practice on the Sunday "Flea markets" -( US term, forget what he called them.) back in the late 1800's. They had not been cherry picked for good numbers.

I listed a dozen of them on hipstamp noting the pinhole and pricing them at normal sell pricing for plate number and just checked - they all sold long ago. Still have a few dozen left - time to list again.

re: a pinhole in a stamp?

A few years ago I had a high value stamp with a very small round hole in it. I had it expertized by the APS. Their conclusion was that it was a "worm hole".

Pin holes are actually very common, here's a French stamp with them.
BTW, this stamp has both versions with and without holes.
