Interesting article posted by APS here suggests that soaking stamps in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 10 minutes does wonders for old stamps (with the recommendation that they be soaked in water with a little detergent ahead of time to remove organics). Anyone try this?

"'That's just it,' said the Hemulen in despair. 'It's finished. There isn't a stamp, or an error that I haven't collected. Not one. What shall I do now? ''Nature study!' declares the Hemulen. 'I shall botanize'. "

re: Soaking stamps in hydrogen peroxide

It is generally a bad idea to soak stamps directly in hydrogen peroxide. It is a highly reactive chemical which could damage the stamp or dissolve the ink.

The following method is also effective, involves hydrogen peroxide, but in a far gentle manner.

That is the conventional wisdom I had always heard, so I was rather surprised to see that is not the case when using an over the counter (3%) concentration for 10 minutes. A longer soak did not affect the inks but rather started to degrade the paper. Very interesting study with actual evidence. Of course I wouldn't try this with mint stamps or aniline inks.
