My 2009 Van Dam Canadian revenue stamp catalog has a page mentioning them with some example pictures, with a note he would like to have a section on in a future catalog.

Josh, ya made me look. I have the 2022 edition of the Canadian revenue book and sure 'nuff on page 43 they show some examples. It's probably the same page your 2009 edition has. I had never noticed that before!! I'll have a friend scan the page and include it soon! He still says he is planning to expand it in a future edition!
By the way, I was mistaken in my original post. I have Canadian navy vessels, not American! There are about 200 match books in my collection and the graphics are quite incredible.
I have a substantial collection of Canadian match book covers from the 1940's and 1950's. Many of them have a small circle inside of which is written EXCISE TAX PAID 1/5 CENT. Does this give them any status as a sort of excise stamp? I doubt it but I'm just curious if anyone else has experience in this area. I'll give a scan of a couple pages in a few days. They make for a very interesting collection. I lot of US ships visited Halifax during the war and each one seemed to have its own matches. It's also great for businesses in the area that don't exist any more. It's very much a history sort of thing!!
