I don't know, but it would be a good idea. Forever stamps make the Russian and Chinese forgeries possible and lucrative which cost the USPS millions of dollars.
There is no statements on the USPS website about discontinuing Forever stamps. In fact, it appears the price is going up which will make the counterfeits more profitable.
"The cost of a Forever postage stamp is poised to rise in July, under a U.S. Postal Service plan to boost the price of the first-class stamp to 73 cents from the current 68 cents — a price that was just raised in January.
The 5-cent increase would take effect on July 14. If it's approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, it would be the sixth price hike since January 2021."
I was asking because to my surprise it came up in an after lunch table chat, my wife and S-I-L brought it up and me being the stamp collector in the family was not aware of that, try to locate the article in the net with no avail, it probably was created by the same "people" that brings you SUVs for senior for $9,999.00 or rooms in Portugal for $49.00 or you would be speechless crap.
The USPS do themselves no favor by using printing methods and designs that most any printer can easily duplicate. I have a lot of forever stamps and their value is always going up!
I found a China fake just yesterday. I took a very nice 2013 Diwali stamp off paper. When I went to the album to replace the one I had, I had been totally fooled back in 2013! I was shocked at how bad the printing quality and the brightness of the colors on the fake when placed next to the real thing. I'm embarassed for myself. The counterfeiters are much better at it now and the differences are subtle. My envelope of counterfeits is growing.
I have a few counterfeit 2.00 inverted jenny stamps. These are very obvious as their serpentine die cuts were so poorly done so that there is a large margin on one side and the cuts go into the image on the other. The real ones have perfectly uniform margins.
I don’t believe discontinuing Forever stamps would change anything. The Chinese would just print the new stamps with every rate change.
I only have considered how brilliant a idea the Forever Stamps were! Looking back over the past few decades, look at the number of stamps USPS issued with every rate change! All of that cost a lot of money, now the near annual rate change pretty much is a nonevent.
What needs to happen is that the US government needs to crack down on China. There are several factories there cranking out fake stamps for several different countries. And don’t tell me their government doesn’t see this.
Yeah. I bet the counterfeiters could create new values quicker than the USPS.
Maybe the USPS should just cut out the middle man and hire the Chinese to print stamps.
Is it true that the USPS is thinking of phasing out forever stamps?
