I can't really help you with those secret marks, but I do know that the Japanese stamps with the EP characters are revenue stamps.
Jan-Simon,
Thank you for that thought, but my JSDA (Japan Stamp Dealers) catalog does not seem to have a Revenue section, nor does the Japanese Postage Stamp Catalog and Scott doesn't even have that word listed as far as I can see.
I wonder if any of the European stamp catalogs offer anything better, but then I probably couldn't read them anyway, but even pictures might help now! With as many stamp collectors there are someone must have a decent Japanese catalog that is usable. Sometimes I just go BLUB, BLUB, BLUB and wonder why did I ever pick this country to collect???? I didn't have this much trouble with the Czech stamps, or even Hungary, that I picked because they were plentiful and cheap and just as a lark.
Sorry, but it's beer-thirty in Florida,
Mike
Just Googled JP revenue stamps and came up with this - maybe it helps.

That's a very helpful document from the International Society for Japanese Philately (which is worth joining if you haven't already). That ISJP PDF includes a link to the Scandinavian Society for Japanese Philately which is the work of Anker Nielsen who put together the original display upon which the ISJP document is based. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the link in the ISJP PDF to work. Here's a link to Nielsen's full website which includes a separate tab for revenues. He covers a much broader range of years for revenues there than does the ISJP revenue document: http://www.eng.ssjp.dk/ I didn't find anything about "secret marks."

Thank you to both, egertoni and Ted, who just responded so quickly to my request. I am not really sure how far I care to pursue this search of Japanese stamps, which is becoming more involved every day. This is one of the hardest countries for me to collect, mainly language barriers of course, but I do enjoy the earlier issues, post #100 anyway, the ones not so complicated to figure out.
Again, thank you for your quick responses and I will continue to collect the country up to about 1960 as is usual of most of my collection.

Hello there
I have a Japanese catalogue at home - can't remember what it's called ( I'm on holiday in Ireland just now). It may be Sakura ... or may not. It's definitely in Japanese! Finding ones way around it isn't easy. I can take a look when we get back from Emeral Isle at beginning July, if that would help. You'll probably have found the answer by then!
Ps - this holiday started badly - car going nicely, and then ... clutch failed totally. It's in for new clutch which will cost more than the holiday, I expect. We had to rent a car for a week. But Ireland is really beautiful! Wish I'd discovered that years ago.
Does anyone know where to find the information about the secret marks? Surprisingly, Scott's has a bunch of info about those, but it's not much good without explaining where the marks are, while the Japanese references mention them and that's all.
Also, there are two other stamps that don't appear to be listed anywhere in any of the Japanese catalog
material that I have. The stamps are very easy to spot since when you look at them there looks like "E P"
and are just below the Chrysanthemum, that is just below the value, in this case it's 1 SEN and is in Black or Gray ink!
Thank you for any advice you can give!
Mike
P.S. Sorry but the system doesn't appear to like the way I typed this in and has edited to it's form!!
