re: Some Info on this US stamp please

It is a Schermack coil vended from one of their newly invented machines about 1906. The company would make their own coils for use in the machine from imperf sheets bought at the post office. They would be cut into strips and the characteristic perfs added. I suppose that the machines were placed in convenient locations and two one cent stamps would sell for maybe three cents. In 1908, the U.S. issued the world’s first coil stamps. I guess that the machines must have been successful. Scott doesn’t list them because the post office didn’t produce them. I would guess that they are easily worth 2-4 dollars.

It looks to me like a Schermack coil with Type III perfs on a S.577 (1923-26) 2c Carmine. Scott specialized does list these but my old copy does not show any premium for the Schermack coil over the S.577 2c Carmine. My copy is 10 years old.

Thank you both for your help. I was thinking it was for a vending machine.

re: Some Info on this US stamp please

I got my information from a book in my library, “Pictorial Treasury of U.S. Stamps” published in 1974. It seems that this company was successful enough to get the post offices attention. Once the post office began vending coils outside the post offices at face value, they could no longer get an up charge for convenience. I only have one copy of, I think, a two cent stamp.
