I have a file on Newfoundland fake stamps that I'll try to send you by email later. I have no idea where I got it from but it might help!
You better check those things in the middle to see if they touch the oval!

I swear I posted this before after looking at some stuff Harvey just sent me. It's a quacker....On the genuine there is a distinct space between the "F" and the "O" of Newfoundland. Not so with the fake where they appear almost to touch.
Case closed.
Thanks Harvey!

I just checked my Newfoundland #6 - I'm almost glad I don't have one!! It's an expensive little sucker!! It sure would be a pain to find out you bought a fake!!! I hope you didn't pay much for this!!
No...it was in a large lot.
Caveat: I am in no way an expert on genuine vs. fake early Newfoundland stamps. For what it still might be worth, I offer an opinion. Based on a guide I downloaded years ago about Newfoundland fakes, I would say your stamp looks genuine. However, the colour does not look like #6, but certainly matches what I have in my album for #20. Finding a #20 in a large lot also seems far more likely than a #6!
May the discussion continue.
Thanks Cat. Maybe it is the 20. Honestly when I saw the 6 I didn't turn the page. I feel like I'm wasting everyone's time.

#6 scarlet vermilion thick porous wove paper with mesh $7000
#13 orange thin to thick wove paper no mesh $1600
#20 rose wet printing 1st printing soft paper 2nd printing hard paper $80
All prices are for used VG
If you can figure that out you're better than me!!
I supposedly have the last two, hopefully I'm right! When my wife and I figured out we had much more patience than I do now!!
GOOD LUCK!!!
With an oval center it could only be #20. The print quality of the Scott #20 is not the best.
A quick search of the Philatelic Foundation shows a number of copies of legitimate Newfie Scott #20's. As far as I can tell the stamp presented in this thread is genuine.

According to my Unitrade #13 also has an oval center. Scott's is the same. It was a real pain to find Newfoundland in Scott's! First I tried "N" and then after Canada in volume #2. I finally found the provinces in volume 2 before Canada, I didn't expect that but I guess that's what they do. I seems that #6 (scarlet vermilion) , 13 (orange) and 20 (rose) all have oval frames, but different colours. #6 is the darkest and #20 is definitely a rose colour as compared to the orange of #13.

First....I apologize if I posted this before. I looked back and didn't see it, but who knows. This has been sitting in my "Check Later" bin for some time. Not sure why.
In any case, because of the high CV of the real thing, I'm assuming this is fake...but a good one.
Thoughts?
BTW....if I have posted this before, please slam me. I will immediately make an appointment at U of M's geriatric unit.
