Sorry about that!! I have an article somewhere on fake provincial stuff. I'll try to find it to post!
Actually Joe....I'm more worried about the others. Thanks!
John,
I think your copy has the same six with closed top before the word Six Pence. I can resend you the file of BNA forgeries.
Forger A
This is possibly the most dangerous forgery you will encounter.
The width of the stamp is nearly 24 mm (instead of 23 mm).
The paper is too white.
The 6's are slanted, the top is closed and bottom is too large.
The base of the crown has no lip.
Comparing the 6p Forger A bottom with the genuine top we see:
The inner lines are quite good.
The 6's are the obvious weakpoint.
Great stuff...thanks Vinman! If you previously sent that file to e, I'll find it. Thanks again!
John
Update...... I emailed the auction house (Status International in Australia) about the stamp. They allege that all stamps in the lot are genuine, and also, that I bought them as is.
Guess I won't be dealing with them again.
Don't let it rest. If they're fakes they have a responsibility. They're members of the Philatelic Trader's Society (as am I), and the Australian Philatelic Traders Association. Let them know that you'll be lodging a complaint with both groups. I'm sure you'll receive a refund quicker than a bride's nightie heading northwards.
Thanks Dave. I sent them the email I received from PSE. Let's see how they respond. Honestly, I thought the stamp being genuine was a far long shot. I am now more worried about the other 3 early NS stamps (attached here)
. I did not ask them for a refund, and have already a few much less value stamps from the lot. I'm not sure what I was expecting from them, but it sure wasn't this.
Still no response. Hard to believe. I'm going file a complaint with SAN as well.
Can't comment on the blue or green ones but the red (1 cent) looks very genuine to me.
Thanks Jack
John,
I have been comparing your 3 pence issues with my references and I don't see any signs that they are forgeries.
I can't tell about the one penny, the cancel is too heavy for me to check if is a forgery, although I don't see any signs of it being a forgery.
Vince
Thanks Vince
I'm no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Are you really sure that the 6 pence is a fake? I made a comparison of your example with the two images by Vinman: (top genuine, middle fake, bottom yours.
To my eyes, your example looks like more like the genuine than the fake.
Still, your example isn't unused, as I can see what appears to be the remains of a cancel.
Jan
Amazing! Maybe the auction house is correct in denying any fakes in the lot. Thinking I should send it to Greene. I've gone this far. And I really don't want to disparage the auction house if they were correct.
I'll go on record and say that the 6d looks good to me. I think you will get a cert from V.G. Greene Foundation that says something like:
"Genuine used with a cleaned pen cancel and a fault (of some description) top"
To give them the benefit of the doubt, it is possible that, if the stamp was presented as "Unused" to PSE, they may have been responding to "not genuine unused" rather than the stamp itself. Any chance their response was vague in any way? Might be worth a followup to them on that score.
Roy
P.S. All the rest look fine to me as well.
Exchanged emails with auction house today. They still insist it is genuine. I think I will send all to Greene and put this to bed.
Thanks for everyone's input. This Board is great!
This, along with some other really early issues, was too good to be true. If genuine, very rare if unused, and kinda rare if used. However, I thought maybe it's clean used one and contacted PSE about sending it. They told me to send a scan first. I did...and THUD! Not genuine. Not surprised, so hard to be disappointed as it was a three mile home run shot. They didn't say why. I've attached pics here to see if any experts in our group can see any dead giveaways.
Quite impressed with PSE hoping to avoid any cost on my part.
So.....now I have 4 others from this issue. None are near as rare. But, I'm wondering if these too are fakes.
In any case, take a look at the one attached and look for the "tell".
