Phil:
Not plum, lilac. That stamp is referred to as a "Penny Lilac".

We can discuss this at a later time.
It is also the 16 dot rather than the 14 dot. In each corner, the latter is not as common.
Nice postmark though.
I suspect Scottish postmarks are not scarce but I really don't see them all that often. Nice find Phil.
Antonio, thanks.. i am not a serious Great Britain collector..but to me it stood out. After 75 years collecting "countries" is starting to bore me.
and nobody has mentioned the golf connection?
Make sure Musicman sees this post!

The St. Andrews ?

(I was there 2 weeks ago)
Aahh!
St Andrews, the haunts of my youth! (I lived 20 miles away)
The West Sands, the East Sands, the Harbour, Kinkell Holiday Park and of course the femme fatales.
When I was 17 I learned to drive by driving to St Andrews, having an ice cream from Janettas, having a round of putting on the "Humpy" (The ladies putting green) and on the way home having a drink in the bar of the Lathones Hotel in Largoward.

I envy you in that regard, Ian!
This seems to fit here with the title of the post. This is one of the coolest cancellations I have ever seen. I'm not willing to spend the $300 USD to buy it since I don't specifically collect fancy cancels but this is really interesting and I'll probably save the picture and do a bit of research!!

Here is a book on "Wheel of Fortune" cancels by Larry Rausch. It is a free download. BTW, $300 is way too much for the cancel. $25 would be more reasonable.

Thanks Vince! This is not really my area and I've never seen one of these before even though the name rings a bell, possibly through a previous post!! It's really cool and if I see one for a sensible price I might bite! I really thought the price was way too high, but I wasn't sure. It reminded me a bit of the silent precancel from NY called "string of pearls" but I couldn't find it in my book on silent precancels. Thanks for the information, I've learned something today!!
I just went on E-Bay and did a search for them. The prices vary greatly but some are quite cheap. The $300 was out to lunch but the colour was nice. I think I'll put this aside and pick one up eventually on SOR. With all the used US that's being offered I'm bound to find one eventually! There are many items that I save for this site, the prices are always more reasonable and it's always better to buy from people you know and trust!
I have purchased a few of the wheel of fortune cancels on stamps for only a few bucks each.
I think I've posted them elsewhere on the discussion board.
Don't overpay.
I do not consider myself an expert on anything but there are times when i have an eye for a cover or a postmark. I put in my thumb and pulled out a plum (i think).
