I've been thinking about this for a while and finally decided to make a comment. Some of the sellers here send free gifts with their orders. I only collect specific areas so most free gifts, even though I really appreciate the thought, get sent to areas like Holocaust Stamps or to my regular stamp dealer for a discount. Is there any way that the powers that be could put a little mark by my name indicating that, even though I appreciate the thought, you can send my free gift to someone else. If the gift is a classic stamp I can put it in my first three volumes of Scott's International (to 1955). If it's newer I will just probably pass it on. I'm trying to not hurt anyone's feelings but I think other buyers are wanting to raise the same point and are not sure whether or not to do it!

re: How do I say this without seeming ungrateful?

Joe,

I don't know how much work is required to create a database revision that records one's gift preferences, but I suspect it would be more than what would be required in a thank you, such as:

"Dear seller's name,"

"Thank you for thinking of me and sending me something special. That's so kind. I find myself doing precisely the same, forwarding that wonderful gift on to another whose interests are more in line with that gift. Again, thank you, but please don't feel obliged to send more. The quality of your wares is more than sufficient for me."

feel free to use verbatim or to revise any way you see fit, IF you choose to alert sellers to your preference not to receive more than you bought.

that was less than 2 minutes, surely less than what Tim would need. Plus, it conveys your appreciation for that little something extra that another of our very generous SOR members gave, unasked.

Just an idea that I hope will be taken the way it's intended, which is with appreciation for your wanting to make the world a teeny bit better.
