Weirdly, I wasn't aware of that Stamp for Every Country album. It has definitely piqued my interest... I may just have to fill one myself.
I have an old book somewhere about the adventures back in the 1920s or 1930s of chasing down a cover from every country that existed at the time. He was contacting postal authorities and people in countries to get covers mailed to him.
As members here started talking about the Stamp From Every Country, I have considered doing the same with covers. As such I’ve been tossing my foreign covers in one box to sort one day.
Right now my current project is state capitol postmarks from 1903-09 on my beloved Franklin stamp. I have a binder going but I only have about 10 examples so far.
Hi Tom,
I want to wholeheartedly encourage you to pursue a cover from every country. I started collecting this way a few years ago and it has provided me with such a wealth of knowledge and fun as I would never have suspected.
I try to get commercial covers but the last place in my cover collection is currently this philatelic registered cover from Zanzibar.
"Weirdly, I wasn't aware of that Stamp for Every Country album. It has definitely piqued my interest... I may just have to fill one myself."
That ASFEC album at thestampweb.com appears to just be the Smithsonian album with countries in alphabetical order and maps added. I saw that the glaring errors were fixed, but more subtle errors are the same as the Smithsonian pages so the author didn't put a lot of effort into reviewing what was there.
For example, look at the page for Democratic Republic of Congo. It has listed as precedent countries Fernando Po Spanish Colony / Spanish Guinea / French Guinea / Elobey, Annobon and Corisco
None of those are precedent countries for Democratic Republic of Congo. They are in the wrong place in the Smithsonian pages as well. Unless I'm missing something...
I have been through the ASFEC country album and only saw a few errors while listing them in a spreadsheet. I checked my list and had corrected the errors on Congo pages. I have been working off and on on my version of the ASFEC. I tallied the ASFEC album has identified over 700 issues. I added more and got over 1000.

I created my list based upon two primary sources: Knudsen's ASFEC file and the First Issues Collectors Club website. My goal was to create my own version using the source code. I still have not really checked everything and move things around. I try to put occupation stamps in country occupied. I have it all in a spreadsheet. I even scanned and ocr'ed the index in the back of Scott since it includes listings of the BOB issues (dependencies, local issues, occupation, etc) but have not been through all of it. It is all in an excel file so if you want to exchange files pm me.
For example:
Yemen Aden, British Colony, 1937 - 1966
Yemen Mahra State
Yemen Qu'aiti State of Hadhramaut
Yemen Qu'aiti State of Seiyun
Yemen Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Mukalla
Yemen Republic of Yemen
Yemen Royalist Yemen (Mutawakelit Kingdom of Yemen)
Yemen South Arabia 1963 - 1966
Yemen State of Upper Yafa
Yemen Yemen 1918 - 1962
Yemen Yemen Arab Republic
Yemen Yemen, People's Democratic Republic 1968 - 1990
Yemen Yemen, People's of South Yemen
Hi angore,
You appear to have blended the Kathiri and Qu'aiti states in your list:
- Kathiri State stamps were originally inscribed "of Seiyun" and then later "in Hadhramaut".
- Qu'aiti State stamps were originally inscribed "of Shihr & Mukalla" and then later "in Hadhramaut".
Nigel, the listings were tied to first issues with a correction.
Kathiri State of Seiyun - Scott 1/ SG1 (The Qu'aiti State of Seiyun description I had was incorrect)
Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Mukalla - Scott 1/SG 1
Qu'aiti State in Hadhramaut - Scott 29 /SG 29
"It is all in an excel file so if you want to exchange files pm me."
Lars, I noticed that under Cuba, you have no entry for the Stamps of the Cuba War of Independence.
My (very old Scott in Spanish album) has entries in 1874 and 1897. They are referred to as Correo Mambi, and the historical details are interesting They are listed in Edifil #1,2,3,4,5
I will post photos and references under a separate post for Cuba, so as not to distract from this discussion.
rrr...
Also: I could not find Horta. Is there an alphabetical country list. I remember the Smithsonian did not have one.
rrraphy - Horta is on page 38. I will take a look at your info on Cuba.
Thanks!
Lars
I first acquired the Smithsonian album in July of 2018. I then printed the pages, scanned them, and shared them here, with a link to the original PDF file from Smithsonian. Several of us had an extensive and spirited discussion about errors and duplicates on the pages and things we felt were missing. Using the inputs from several members here, including an indispensable spreadsheet from Keijo, plus a set of Scott world catalogs, Stanley Gibbons catalog of Commonwealth & British Empire 1840-1952, and World History Stamp Atlas, I went to work. Five years later, I have the final result. Well, maybe not FINAL, but the next iteration at least. You may disagree with some of the determinations, especially the ones that could easily go either way. If you think I just flat got something wrong, feel free to speak up!
As part of the process I contacted the Smithsonian to see what was on the original panels in the museum the help with some of the more obscure items to see what was intended. Because I pointed out a few errors (like Guatemala isn't in the Caribbean, and Mongolia isn't in Southern Asia), they were kind enough to provide me with a PDF file of what stamp they used on the original panels. That has come in handy a few times.
I rearranged Europe, Africa, and Asia to make more sense, and I added a map for each continent so you can see how I divided things. The original Smithsonian album had spaces for 780 stamps. I have it expanded to 981 stamps.
NOTE: The total of 780 is based on a total of 785 spaces for stamps minus the following:
The space to the left of the vertical bar for Bosnia makes no sense, and in fact the original Smithsonian panels do not have that space.
Saar German Administration was listed twice on page 35 but only once on the panels.
Thrace was listed twice (pages 28 and 101)
Netherlands New Guinea was listed twice (pages 88 and 108)
Italian Offices in Jerusalem was listed twice (pages 120 and 121).
One APPARENT duplicate isn't really a duplicate:
Eastern Rumelia under Turkey was for Scott #1-19.
Eastern Rumelia under Bulgaria was for Scott #20-40 when the name changed to South Bulgaria.
However, I placed both under Bulgaria.
I have spent the past few years researching and finalizing this. I'm still short 46 stamps, but most of those have dangerous counterfeits. The next step is to learn more about the troublesome stamps and try to find legitimate stamps to fill those spaces. I don't want any weeds in my collection. If you see any that I missed, feel free to point them out!
I have finished uploading updates to my US collection as well, but I am just now updating the Topical album so please ignore that for now.
All albums can be reached from my signature link, or here is a direct link to the upgraded Stamp from Every Country album:
