The Free City of Frankfurt was one of four city states in the German Confederation from 1815 to 1866. It was the seat of the Bundestag and a financial center of European standing. In the Frankfurt Wachensturm in 1833, insurgents tried to start a German revolution. In 1848/49 the Frankfurt National Assembly met in the Paulskirche.
During the German War it was occupied by Prussian troops on July 16, 1866. On October 3, 1866, Prussia annexed the Free City of Frankfurt and incorporated it into the newly created province of Hesse-Nassau.

I've derived so much help here, I'm back with another couple questions with 'high hopes' for answers.
As part of my Germany States through Weimar collection I've three binders of Thurn and Taxis material. Two of those focus on Frankfurt as a City State. Included in that are a few items sent from Frankfurt during the Napoleonic Era French Occupation. The image below shows a folded letter sent to "a Monsieur Monsieur de Welz conseiller de S(on) A(ltesse) S(erenissime) M(on)s(ei)g(neu)r le Prince regnant de la Tour et Tassis a (D)jischingen. That translates as "To: Sir/Lord de Welz, intimate Advisor to His Serene Highness Monseigneur the Reigning Prince of Thurn and Taxis, in Dischingen."
I can locate members of the Welz family, but I cannot identify this "Monsieur de Welz." Can you?
The next image is a Frankfurt newspaper stamp. This is the only example I've ever seen. I dates to before 1866 because Prussia annexed Frankfurt that year and it lost its status as a "Freistadt," a Free City. I presume this is some sort of revenue. Do you have any information?
