It was originally offered in 1955 (1767a) and then in 1962 it was issued again with a 1962 overprint and an overprint on the bottom (same #). That's all Scott's says! Stanley Gibbons has the same information for its MS1926a and MS2693a. But SG adds the following "There are two types of marginal overprint, differing in the position of the first line over the second line". I had no idea about this difference! So I assume the three types are: 1) no overprints 2) & 3) the two slightly different marginal overprints.
EDIT: I'm looking at the three posts in your E-Mail. I must be a bit dense but I can't see any differences between your pictures! If there are differences in the un-overprinted stamp sheets they are not mentioned in Scott's or SG. I'm confused which seems to happen fairly often with Russia!! Hopefully someone else will be of more help than me!!
Thank you, Harvey... Yes I know that Scott is always confusing! The individual stamp (Scott 1767) was issued November 29, 1955, and the souvenir sheet (Scott 1767a) was issued September 26, 1958. I am not interested in the souvenir sheet overprinted in 1962 (I think it might be Michel Block 30 ?). The illustrations that I posted are sheets that are listed on eBay, where the seller is identifying them as Michel Type I, II and III. The only visual I see in the souvenir sheets from 1958 is the difference in perforations extending by one around the block of four on the centerlines. However, I am not sure that is what differentiates them by 'Type' according to Michel.
Neither Scott's nor Stanley Gibbons lists a series of types for the original sheet. Also my Minkus album doesn't show types and my experience is that they tend to show damn near everything!! I see what you mean about the extra two perfs in the first one and, I might be imagining things, but the colours seem a bit more subdued in the third one. That might be the scan though. I plan to ignore the three types and be content with what I have. If I run into the difference in the overprints I might be tempted but I'm not going to search it out. However if you ever find out the differences between Types I, II and III please put up a post! Good luck!
Well... I found several Michel East Europe Band 7 volumes for sale on eBay. Most are located in Europe and want $30-40 for shipping!! Finally found one sourced in South Carolina with $6.00 shipping. So, I placed the order & we'll get our information soon. When I have the book, I'll be glad to look up in Michel any other in info that may help you with Russia as well. Cheers!
That will be interesting Terry.
I've just checked my old Michel Europa-Katalog Ost 1998/99 and I don't see any mention of different types of this.
Love that the online Michel translates most of the countries into English:
Nice one Jerry!
It looks as though the sheets in the original post are Type I and two copies of Type III.
I like the way the design code "bla" has been translated to "blah".
Well... There you have it !! Thanks so very much, Jerry.
Looks like I will be able now to complete my album layout.
Cheers.
My album only shows one version so that's what I'll stick with for now. But at least thanks to this post I'll know what to look for if it should show up somewhere. The difference seems a bit minor but when you compare it to the differences in the early US it could almost seem significant!!
...just looking at the catalog Zagorsky, 2008 edition, there, this variety don't have any importance, even not mentioned there, so it is something normal for this issue.
The overprint from 1962 year have two types, but it is on overprinted text.
Missing from my Michel catalogs is the Band 7 which covers Russia. I am interested to learn the difference between the various types of 1958 Russia Block 27 (Arctic Observation Post). I understand there are three types. What is it that identifies each type?
Type I....?
Type II....?
Type III....?
