I purchased a 2024 Scott Specialized and quickly noticed it was smaller than the 2021 version. I knew they were removing sections but did not realize the impact.

re: Scott 2024 specialized vs 2021 Specialized

I have not opened the shrink wrapped book but I knew some of the front matter (stamp identifer of definitives now $19.99 list) and the graded stamp values (now priced at $39.99 list) were removed. They may have expanded the values guide to compete with the PSE list.

re: Scott 2024 specialized vs 2021 Specialized

Didn't they take out the UN and make it into its own catalog?

Also comparing what I can see from the "Including": Looks like essays and proofs were removed as well. I don't see a catalog for these on the Amos site - possibly they will be doing this in the future?

As for the stamps by grade: 2016 Scott Specialized showed grades for 50, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 98.
I bought the 2023 Specialized By Grade catalog and they dropped the 50 and added 100. Can't speak for the 2024 edition.
PSE shows all of these grades 50-100 and also prices all but the 50 as Jumbo.

I kind of liked them having the 50 as there are a lot of poorly centered classic US stamps and it's nice to have more of a guide as to how to value them.

re: Scott 2024 specialized vs 2021 Specialized

In addition to UN, essays and proofs are out too. Now, I never used any section that was removed but the price has not come down either. But compared to the digital version ($110 a year), the printed version will still be very useful in just one year. The digital write up states "more images than digital printed".

For graded values, PSE's value list is more comprehensive.

Folks:

Scott removed the UN section (it is now a separate catalogue) and the definitve ID section at the front (that is also a separate catlogue). Across all six volumes and the US Specialised, they really reduced the size of the images of the stamps.

I'm keeping my 2017 catalogue, along with any other newer edition I purchase.

I purchase them every year for my dad as Christmas gift and i get them back in a couple years after I give them to him. I do not usually benefit from the editoria" improvements and for prices you can look at ebay if there is any question.

If Scott really looked at prices realized on eBay, we'd have a repeat of 1989-1990 all over again.

Interesting!

I was just going through my 2003 Specialized and for maybe the first time, I noticed all that stuff up in the front of the catalog. Everything from "stamp identifier of definitive" to "US states dates of territory established and statehood". I thought most of it was unneeded filler. Guess Scott realized that.

I also found the shortcoming of my 2003 is that with my first day cover store, I'm needing to look up much later dated stamps than ever before.

So I may be in the market for a much later slightly used catalog!

Phil:

Put the $500 US towards stamps. You can always use the catalogues at the stamp club for more modern things.
