There is alot to learn and alot to collect.
This is meant to be one of my "fun collections" so I'll keep it fairly simple. I'll organize what I have by picture on stamp and then by what is on the stamps. I'm not going to worry too much about Scott # or varieties, if I happen to notice something on SoR I am obviously missing I will pick it up. I just looked through my Scott's US specialized and there are many pages of them with many varieties of each one. I really have no intention at this time of going there!! Best to keep it simple for a while, I have enough problems keeping my classic stamps straight!! But if I do eventually go into more detail I'm sure there are experts here who can give help when needed!!
The Transportation series is where PNC collecting went into full swing. If I recall correctly, there was only one PNC issued before this series. Once upon a time, I embarked on this series, and found it far too difficult to find on-cover examples to put together a decent collection. This series also marked the evolution to service inscribed in the design precancels as opposed to overprints with lines.

I just sorted out the transportation series! Obviously I don't have all the varieties but the only picture I am missing is the ferryboat (A1825). There are a few I only have one of, for example the Seaplane (A1827) and the Cog railway (A1822). I really like the series but I still don't really want to go crazy with it. I'll pick up any of the imprints (?) that I can find. It seems that very few stamps have more than one type and many don't seem to have any. I could be totally out to lunch on this since this is really the first day of me collecting them! Fun days ahead I think!! I seem to have two versions of the circus wagon, the locomotive and the Omnibus. I also seem to have two colours of the canoe and I just noticed I am also missing the lunch wagon (A1823), one more to look for!!
I like this series too!
I’ve put aside first day cover and mint stamps I come across.
But my interest is always legit usage on cover so I keep an eye out for those too.
Tom, I must admit I really like the series as well!! I really dislike most of the newer US stuff but that series is quite elegant! I like looking at them!! The other recent series I like, and have most of them, is the American Issue from 1975 - 81, especially the musical instruments.
I've been sorting through a large US precancel collection I picked up and noticed this person had a huge selection of the US transportation series. It's well after my 1977 cutoff but I sort of like them. Most (EDIT: some) are precancelled, either with bars and overprint or as part of the stamp (bulk rate, Zip + 4 presort, presorted first class, nonprofit org., Blk. Rt. car-rt sort, bulk rate carrier route sort, etc. ). I need to do some research to see what a lot of this means! There are quite a few with bars and towns, just bars, just towns, etc. It sort of looks like fun!!!
I will probably keep the collection simple - sort by picture, not worry about Scott #'s, use a stock book and do half a page per picture and when it's done and sorted I'll try to figure out what I'm missing! It'll take a while to get to that stage but I'll probably think about filling some gaps on SoR. I know I see that sort of thing offered here occasionally. He also has a bunch of a later famous Americans series, some musical instruments, what looks like a series on antique items and various other thing. Most are precancelled but some are plain! When I get the organization done I'll let you know and if anyone out there saves this stuff I should be able to fill gaps since I have enough of it to probably fill two stock books. I have to be careful since he has several mounted reverse side showing with no explanation! Were some issued with florescent reverse sides? I have no idea what-so-ever. All of his/her stuff should keep me entertained for awhile!
