Digital change
There is hardly a person who is not involved in one way or another with the phenomena that are summarized under the keywords “digital change” and “digital transformation”. The associated developments no longer only permeate technology and the economy, but also many areas of social and public life.
In this context, the postage stamp is also becoming more digital: a matrix code appears for the first time on the special “Digital Change” postage stamp.
The matrix code enables individual, consistent traceability of the route of letters.
In this way, Deutsche Post is fulfilling its customers' wishes for more transparency when sending letters.
An additional benefit for philatelists and interested customers is that detailed background information on the respective stamp can be accessed via the matrix code in the Deutsche Post Post & DHL app.

Hi @HockeyNut
Interesting topic that caused me to look for additional information on the net.
I found a catalog (?) online:
In which category do these German stamps fit?
I don't have a recent Michel catalog (after 2020) to see data about the issues of these stamps.
I understood that 2 scans are done:
- the first upon filing in the postal system
- the second upon arrival at the recipient's post office.
I guess that the date and time are recorded automatically.
What I didn't understand for sure is how to ensure traceability for any stamp out of the thousands issued.
The datamatrix code differs from stamp to stamp? - does each one have a different serial number?
If yes, does it mean that the printing is done in two stages: the drawing of the stamp and then the datamatrix code?
Why are they subject to copyright?
Did I understand or not (?) that the stamps that are issued together with an NFT assign / confirm this property right.
Gerom,
This is all new for me too.
This is what i found on the website : www.deutschepost.de
The new generation of stamps.
Stamps with matrix code and internet stamps can now do more than “just” postage: in conjunction with the new Post & DHL app, they offer you basic shipment tracking* for your letters and postcards. In addition, you will receive information about the stamp and the motif in the app - an attractive added value not only for collectors. Your advantages:
Basic tracking* of your letters and postcards
Interesting information about the stamp and the motif
Always informed via the Post & DHL app
* Basic shipment tracking documents the processing of the shipment in the start and destination letter center. For letters sent abroad, tracking is documented until they are forwarded abroad. If you need proof of delivery, we recommend REGISTERED MAIL and the additional PRIO service for priority treatment.
It's that easy:
You can access the shipment status and information about the stamp motif at any time using the free Post & DHL app.
Download the Post & DHL app to your mobile phone for free.
Stick the postage stamp / internet stamp on the letter and scan the matrix code before sending. You can find the scan button at the top right of the shipment search mask.
Retrieve shipment status and information about the stamp motif.
You will receive status information about when and in which of our logistics centers your shipment was processed in the sorting machines, and on which day the shipment will be delivered. Confirmation of actual delivery is not part of the basic shipment tracking. If proof of delivery is required, we recommend our additional registered mail service.
One of the interesting queries about the matrix codes will be the decision on the forgeries that are used. Will the first use of a forgery, identified by the matrix code, mean that the real stamp legally purchased, will now be rejected as the postal authority system will say that the stamp has already been used.
Bearing in mind that a whole sheet/booklet of forgeries will have the same matrix code.
The whole tracking system is pointless to those of us without mobile 'phones.
It is obvious from the image of the David Bowie stamps that the matrix code is different.
It is interesting how and when it is printed...it is impossible for it to be on the same printing plate as the drawing.
What prevents the counterfeiters from printing the stamp drawing from the sheet to insert it into a computer printer and print different matrix codes?
@Gerom, yes the genuine ones will all have a different matrix, it is the forged ones that will be identical.
Edit to add:- I linked to this article from Norvic Philatelics earlier on another thread. Makes interesting reading. You may need to scroll to the top of the page.

Hi @sheepshanks
Thanks, interesting article.
From November 16, 2020, Deutsche Post has tested a new – blue – cancellation ink in three letter centers (Bayreuth, Frankfurt am Main and Hagen). This was used in various cancellation machines for different letter formats for a period of four weeks. The aim of the test is further optimization in the areas of readability and cancellation procedures.
What was tested back then has now been put into regular operation. Since the beginning of February 2021, all offices have been converted and shipments have been canceled with blue ink. According to the postal service, the new cancellation ink should lead to optimization in the areas of legibility and cancellation procedures.
This is also related to the introduction of stamps with a matrix code. If a black cancellation is placed over it, it is hardly legible.
The introduction of this matrix code should, on the one hand, make the new stamps more counterfeit-proof, but on the other hand, they cannot be used multiple times - this has previously been possible with stamps, for example if the postage stamp was accidentally not stamped. There are also criminals who wash the previously black ink from the stamps and sell the postage stamps illegally.
According to the postal service, counterfeiting and the reuse of postage stamps are “a massively growing problem”. Since the matrix code stamps will also be digitally canceled in the future, multiple use is impossible.
The new stamps, which are slightly larger than their predecessors, will in future be stamped with blue ink. This means that the recipients should be able to scan the matrix code after receiving the letter in order to receive information about the shipment route and background information about the stamp motif.
“Digital change: The stamp is becoming digital”: This is what it says on a new 80 cent stamp that was published on February 4, 2021. The blue face on it represents the topic of artificial intelligence, but even more striking is the so-called matrix code on the right side of the brand. It is intended to ensure that digital change now also reaches postal delivery - by making the path of a letter traceable to a certain extent.
Deutsche Post speaks of a “new generation of stamps” whose code should be scanned at two points along the shipment route. “Thanks to the matrix code, we are now also making ourselves transparent in the area of conventional stamps,” says Tobias Meyer, the responsible postal director, in typical marketing language: From now on, you can use the Post & DHL app to find out when a letter with such a stamp has been received. was processed in the letter center in the region of departure and when it arrived in the destination region”.
As a customer, you can see “how quickly we transport your letter,” says Meyer.
The post office speaks of “basic shipment tracking” on its website.
In practice, the innovation means more, but by no means full transparency: after all, there is no longer a third scan when the letter is delivered. The sender cannot see via the app whether a letter has reached the recipient. If you want to be certain about this, you will still have to send an expensive registered letter.
However, the blue color has the disadvantage for us collectors that the cancellation is often difficult to read or washed out. The cancellation also fades when the stamp is removed from a letter/postcard.
