Flyspecking is slang meaning to examine closely or in minute detail; to scrutinize. As it relates to philately, it is the examination of a stamp for a petty or insignificant error or flaw. Or, in another perspective, you are a treasure hunter looking for a previously unrecognized variation.
I once found a minute variation in the frame of the first airmail stamps of Afghanistan... turned out that the variation had been previously identified and was indicative of a forgery! So sad.
Something I'll never forget...
There was a guy who pointed to some insect damage on an old cover and said, "Looked it's all fly specked!" He thought fly specking was a polite way of saying insect feces!
Not sure what this means in relationship to right and proper stamp collecting. Who can answer this question?
