Do you have a reference for a list of precancels for each state?
I have a small collection of precancels but no info as to the total issued for each state.
The book does exist but I don't have a copy! I will order one soon since I now have a huge number of precancels from many towns and cities. There's a huge number from New York and Illinois.
@Harvey
Don't forget Wash D.C.!
And maybe there are precancels from some of our territories? Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands? ????
Note that there are two types of precancels..
Bureau- printed on the full sheets at the Bureau of Engraving. These are very uniform and clean.
Local- these are hand cancelled at the local post office. I remember a rubber stamper that cancelled six at a time. In fact back in the 1970s the Matawan NJ post office let me cancel my own stamps. These are less professional looking than Bureau cancels, often thick and crooked. Inky depending on the maintenance and condition of the device.
Records were kept on Bureau issues so there not only is/was a catalog, but I remember the availability of an album.

Lots of good stuff here to download for free for those interested in precancels!
Just got power back an hour ago and had 90 emails to go through and these many threads for over two days!!
I have DC and two of the territories - Canal Zone and Puerto Rico. Hopefully the rest will fall in place over time!!!
EDIT: I have some of both types of precancels but am not going to try to get one of each (yet!). I am very happy to get one of each state and my next job is to reorganize the over 3200 stamps to be better able to see what I have. The collector split them up into several collections, some by stamps and some by state and sometimes, within the state by city/town. I'm planning to first reorganize in a very large stock book by state and then within the state by town and city. It will be a huge job but when I'm done I should have a better idea what I have. When I have that done, probably a Winter job, I'll let you know and anyone looking for a certain town or city can let me know. I will probably end up with all, or most, of the state capitals. There are just so many stamps jammed into small areas that it's hard to tell what's there now! A fun, but long, job awaits!
The newer material is going to be the pain because, as yet, I have no idea what I'm going to do with it since my official US cutoff is 1977. Decisions, decisions!!
Now back to YouTube - the guy I follow in snooker just won a major tournament and I have many hours to watch!!!
I would really like to find a good comprehensive book dealing with US precancels. I'm not interested in something that just deals with the classic US stamps, I know that book exists. I want something that carries on to the newer material as well - things like the Nonprofit Org. overprints. Does such a book exist and if it does can anyone supply a title and publisher? There's a few excellent books on Canada precancels by city and province but there are much fewer to worry about. A US equivalent book would have to be fairly large.

Question about the description:
"PSS Town & Type Catalog of the US, 8th Ed, (2019) Paper Version
Printed catalog lists and prices all 42,502 precancel types from 21,350 towns. All standard type styles and local types illustrated. Significant introduction to precancels. PDF downloadable version is also available below."
2019 is the year the 8th edition of the catalog was published.
As mentioned in the description, it covers all 42,000 plus precancels from 21,500 towns.
In essence it says it covers them all.
I do not recall which SOR member said, you can't believe everything in books!

I just got back from a trip to my local stamp dealer that I've been using him and his father since the early to mid 1970's. I picked up two stock books and one binder containing over 3200 precancels and various other weird items. It'll take years to sort through all the mysteries in the books - things I have no idea yet what they are!! It's sort of what Howard Carter said when he took the first look into King Tut's Tomb and was asked what he saw - Things, wonderful things! At least I now have a complete set of the states and many of the capitals. There were only a couple Alaska's and only one Wyoming, but at least I have them. If any serious precancel collector is only missing a few maybe you might want to send me an E-mail! I don't want to get too generous until I understand the collector's sorting system a bit better.
In the binder are pages of newer items like PRESORTED STD, NONPROFIT ORG., PRESORTED FIRST CLASS, BULK RATE, BLK. RT. CAR-RT SORT (?), ZIP +4 PRESORT, ETC. Many newer stamps with city overprints, many put in reversed to suggest paper varieties. Also pages of perfins that need to be researched. I guess I have lots of interesting research ahead of me!! Not bad for a total of $85 CD plus GST!!
For someone who said he wasn't going to get too carried away with this sort of material I guess I don't have much choice now. At least most of it is labeled even though I don't really understand his system yet! Lots of fun awaits, I guess!
