He was a cachet maker from Detroit Michigan.. He also created perfin stamps and had the initials HN so that you knew that the cover was a true Nakano cover He would make a set of 50 covers or less, some with odd shapes, mechanical pop ups, sliding elements origami or jigsaw elements.
This info was found by googling his name Can anyone add to this info?
Nakano recently died, maybe one or two years ago. He was, as others note, from the Detroit area. i learned of him initially from large FDC covers he created using, among other things, Christmas seals. A seal collector, George Miura (he's not SOR) wrote about him in Seal News, the journal I edit for the Christmas Seal and Charity Stamp Society.
So, imagine my surprise, when Tina, my squeeze who more than tolerates my philatelic passions, and I stumbled on a trove of his stuff at one of the dealers at GASS. I had shown her the Nakano covers in an issue of Seal News, so she was already familiar with some aspects; but we stumbled on much, much more. He was HILARIOUS and inventive and willing to break every rule in the FDC handbook.
Even more in the scope of Kizmet, I met up with Randy Kerr and his wife at GASS and I couldn't tear myself away from Nakano's stuff. I bought a huge cache of his stuff, and I couldn't be happier. Randy, by the way, is from Nakano's home state: Michigan.
If you don't want the cover, let me know, and I'll jump into the fray.
Thankyou David for the information This is a great example of collecting a fun collection and making collecting FUN!!!
There are a fair number of the covers on ebay at the moment .

thanks for the context on the possible future of that cover; armed with all that, I placed myself in restraints. I do hope you win that cover.
Tonight is our local club's business meeting and occasional show and tell; i had planned to bring my Nakano treasures from GASS (I still will, but wanted to highlight the plan preceeded the post).
The auction is up on Tuesday, hopefully if I lose power tomorrow it will be back by then. But just in case I added a bit to my bid, it would be great to win the item. Here's hoping!!!
The cover went for almost $55 USD and I had a really stupid bid of $52 on it, way more than I really wanted to pay. I think, since Nakano items are usually a fair bit cheaper than that, that someone local wanted it badly for the Kaulback Island connection. You can't have everything you want!
I got two really wonderful early US stamps from Greg yesterday so I guess it was a good day! My page 1 of my US album is now officially finished with the #13 I got from Greg!
I learned a great deal about Nakano and his creations , all because of your post.....Thankyou...I hope others did too
I bid on an item I probably should have done research on first!! I guess this person was manufacturing weird material in the Detroit area and I bid on one of his "messed with" first day of issue covers from a local postage (Kaulback Island) that I collect. Does this person's stuff have any value at all if I am "lucky" enough to win the auction? I really have to learn to do the research before I bid instead of after!!!
