I am very confused about these two stamps. Can somebody show a 973 stamp and a 1342 stamp and explain the differences? Thanks, Virgil

re: Show me how to separate 973 from 1342 or 1342 from 973!

I'm sorry I can't post a scan until tomorrow night and it probably wouldn't help much anyway. The 973 is red brown or what Scott's calls henna and the 1342 is a bit darker and is called brown carmine and is definitely darker. The only problem is that there is a 1342A which is carmine lake which is very similar to 1342 but is a bit brighter. Those colour differences have been driving me nuts for years. Sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. My only suggestion is to find the three shades and put them in your book together, my Minkus does just that, and call them the number 973-1342-1342A! Works for me!! A colour guide actually makes it more confusing since, depending on your eyes, they don't look very different!! GOOD LUCK!!!

In two scans I show the stamps I have. My Scott (year '22) does not list 1342A. It seems that first row of 7 stamps have the same color, probably red brown, even if last stamp may be different. Should they be 932? The two stamps in second row look towards brown carmine, 1342?

It looks like you have it right! I should explain something. My Scott's doesn't list the 1342A but my Minkus album shows another colour variation and I called it 1342A, sorry about the confusion! I forget which stamp at the moment but Scott's gives a colour variation on another very similar stamp (EDIT: 1654 and 1654a) and gave it the A connotation and I decided to do the same. Just ignore what I said about 1342A and go with the two colours you already have. My bad!!

Correction on my previous print. Replace 932 with 973.
