I just spent a while going through my album checking out the precancels for state capitals. I really expected to find more than 14!! It's really too bad that Chicago is not the capital of Illinois, I have douzens. The same applies to New York, New York!! And if I ever find an Alaska it had better say Juneau! Some of those capitals are pretty darn obscure!
That's one of the things that most intrigues me about stamp collecting... One learns so much geography. That's how I found out that the capital of Newfoundland is St. John's, and the capital of Prince Edward Island is Charlottetown! Of course now we have the internet, but that is so much instant gratification. I really enjoy the thrill of the hunt! I'd send you a precancel of Seattle Washington, but you'd really want an Olympia Washington.
I remember in about grade 5 or 6 memorizing the US states and capitals and thought I knew them all but some of the ones I ran into were total surprises to me. I wonder if they've changed a few since the mid 1960's. I tell younger people about the things I had to memorize years ago and they think it was awful! From what I've read memorizing uses a part of the brain that is not used for much else and people who don't use that part for rote learning lose the use of it! I don't regret the stuff I had to learn by this old fashioned way, it sure helps with crossword puzzles!! Why did people in Nova Scotia learn and memorize US history and US facts? Well knowing things about your neighbour is not a bad thing!! We also had to memorize the Canadian provinces and capitals. Most kids in our school system now probably can't name the Canadian provinces, unless they are from another country, of course. That's not a slur of any sort. I found as a teacher that our immigrant students were more knowledgeable about Canada than the "regular" (not sure what word to use!) Canadians do. Enough rambling!!
"Yes Santa Claus, there is a Virginia!!"
Definitely.
Harvey- drop me a note with the state capitols you need! I have a big book of precancels that ain’t doin nuthin!
Note that state capitols are interesting. Some are prominent and majestic, like you’d imagine and some just aren’t!
For instance Cheyenne, Wyoming looks like an old town in New Jersey!
I'll send you a note later. In a few days I'll be seeing my local dealer and he has a huge lot of precancels for me in three large binders. Hopefully I'll finish the states and most of the capitals. I'm getting over 3000 precancels for less than $100, you can't beat that. maybe I can help a few of the other precancelers (?) complete what they are searching for!!
I was looking through my US album a few minutes ago and up there in the corner of a page was a Virginia precancel, on a #810 James Monroe, a Richmond VA. precancel. I didn't think I had one so now only 10 to go!! And my local stamp dealer has about 3000+ precancels put away for me in 2 stock books and a 3-ring binder!! I should be complete very soon and I bet I have most of the state capitols as well!!
