@1898,
Thanks for.....ummm.....oh, yeah - "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything"
....guess that leaves me speechless.
Difficult to read all the information that would help resolve your questions.
Because there's a postal return address, we might want to consider that this is not a soldier but someone using the USA APO system. That would explain the use of 2c stamp rather than free "soldier's mail" or "officer's mail."
The manuscript in the censor circle is likely that of the unit's censor
Don't know APO 39. it wasn't the the 39th Division, which didn't arrive until later in the year. My APO references all begin with WWII.
It is possible that's from an AEF sheet, but those guys are pretty rare.

Roy,
booklet panes intended to be issued to troops sailing for France; 1c and 2c values.

Thanks for your input, you bring up interesting points I had not considered!
I have just a few little bits (questions I'm thinking about) to add, looking at the stamp (correct me if I'm wrong) it appears to be much cleaner than the rest of the postcard, in addition it appears to be perf. 12 x 12 (again correct me if I'm wrong), and the stamp is not cancelled? What do you think?

No idea about perfs….. cant measure stuff on my screen
Yes, cancel misses stamp entirely, but card and stamp both look. Fairly fresh. Possible it was added later; but why?
@amsd
I used the Weiss method of measuring perfs, and instead of 12 I estimate 11, but really not sure, contrast makes it difficult for me. to see perfs holes.
"Possible it was added later; but why?" If it was added later to increase the price, all it took was put stamp over Free assuming free is under stamp, thus you change a low value AEF postcard into a postcard using one of the AEF pane stamps. Actual AEF pane stamps used are rare. (Just my guess of what could be). The cancel is June 1918, AEF panes stamps were required at first, but shortly later in 1917 were not required. (This is why I think this post card might have been changed with added stamp maybe)
My Martin Armstrong book is packed away, I'm moving soon, The Armstrong book deals in part with AEF pane usage and background.

i doubt an untied stamp would add much to the price of the card
then there's "why affix a stamp to a free card" argument, which if successfully countered because it WAS NEEDED FOR CIVILIAN would lead one to "how did Civvie get an AEF stamp so late in the war?"
just trying to approach this as an expertizer might
My reference material is packed away (I'm moving soon).
I need help as I think this is a put together post card, Here's what I know/think:
1. Under the stamp should be "FREE" (I think).
2, See scan, cancelled June 1918 (I think a stamp was not required by June 1918, 2 cent stamp).
3. See scan "Fire Dance" side of card, the dark colors cover any additional marking (I know).
4. I can't make out the hand written portion of the "CENSORED MARK FOR APO 39", in addition where was APO 39 during June 1918 (I think).
5. I can't resolve the name of printer (I know).
I can't determine if this is an actual example with right and proper usage of 499F AEF Booklet stamp or not!
This post card was found on Ebay Stamps this morning.
