First off, how will you know that a reply has been addressed to @1898 if you have not looked at the replies?
Second, according to Scott and Unitrade, no stamps were issued with watermarks during the specified period, however Newfoundland did have watermarked stamps but was not at that time part of the dominion. Other provinces may have used watermarked paper but I have not checked. Your Scott catalogue should enable an answer.
I will be quite happy to be corrected if my answer is in error.
@1898 I wasn't going to get involved with this one but "what the hey?"! The only watermark I've ever had to check with Canada is to look for the "E. & G. Bothwell, Cluthra Mills" watermark to determine a certain paper type with the large Queens series but that was well before 1880. I'm not saying watermarks weren't used with Canada's stamps other than that but I can't find a reference to it being of any importance. And without pouring through every stamp entry I don't remember seeing any watermark variations. I could be wrong though! Newfoundland is another matter, watermarks are important in some issues but that had nothing to do with Canada. I also don't remember having to check watermarks for B.C., N.S., N.B. or P.E.I. If I was going to make an educated guess I would say there were no watermark problems to report in this time period. But again, I'm really not an expert, so I could be wrong! Please correct me if I am!

There is a difference between reading the posting, and looking at a posting! It's simple, I can't think of a reason for your posting?
I do not have a cat. yet for Canada so I did not know about the watermarks for the period of 1880-1940, hence my posting!
I'm looking for a cat. that will fit my needs, but have not found one yet!

I almost skipped your posting, please address it to "1898", I've noticed in other threads SOR members reply sometimes with the actual person's name, I fairly new to SOR and don't know everyone. Are we not supposed to use each handle name (example 1898) just to keep everything straight, I find it confusing if the handle name is not used.
Recently someone used the persons nick name, really confusing, I looked but could not find the nick name under the members list, took a few minutes, finally gave up trying to figure out who said what!
Hope you understand.
Many thanks for the watermark information.

Very interesting.
HARVEY,
Thanks for the details anout watermark usage for Canadian stamps. I did not realize there are not multiple stamp issues with a variety of watermark types for Canada as occurs for USA and Great Britain stamps among others. I just never noticed as I tend to collect to Scott albums and really thought they might be simplifying the listings and that other varieties might be present in the Unitrade catalog which is unequaled for Canadian stamps with no real competition currently. I suspect that for some time to come its last issue will be the preeminent resource for Canadian philately.
Jerrell, thankfully except for the large Queens, I don't think we have to worry about watermarks. Since stamps are usually printed on expensive paper there very well might be watermarks but as far as I know nothing to be concerned about. But again, Newfoundland is a bit different! Have a good weekend and everyone stay safe.

1898....if you are focusing on Canada stamps the Unitrade catalog is the only obvious source.
@bigcreekdad
I guess you did not know, Unitrade is going out of business!

Do you really want a catalog of Canada?
You do not want unitrade catalog because they may go out of business, but are interest in Darnell catalog which is no longer published.
You do make sense.
Are you just here to cause confusion.

@d1stamper
Any talking about the Unitrade is useless.
The Darnell catalog might or might not be my choice, I still trying to find background etc. on the Darnell catalog, do you have factual info on it or is this just a guess?
Hope this ends all the confusion!

If collecting up to 1940, any relatively modern specialized catalog would be sufficient to cover that period. While there could be additional discoveries about classic issues in the future, a relatively current specialized catalog would hopefully capture all the important information on stamps over 80 years old, except future catalog price changes, which I believe many of us consider relatively useless anyway, in comparison with the philatelic information.
Anyone considering the Darnell catalog, be aware that the Darnell catalogue, while one of the best catalogues for constant plate varieties, uses its own numbering system. The numbers do not align with Scott numbers, unlike the Unitrade catalogue which uses Scott numbers under licence.

1898.....Going out of business does not equate to worthless. Especially if you only are interested in stamps up to late 1940s. Darnell's proprietary numbering system is a definite no go if you are a seller.
I didn't know about Darnell's numbering system, but at least it's in English. The version I saw on line was in French. I know it's probably going out of business but Unitrade is the way to go because of the Scott's numbers and I can't imagine any catalog giving more information. It even gives precancels which is ignored by Scott's.
I've made up my mine, with everything said the choice is very clear the Darnell's cat. is the best choice. I cat. numbers is of no concern to me.
I still trying to find background etc. on the Darnell catalog,
To find ''background '' about virtually anything these days it is far simpler to type the word into your computers search page.
Please address any posting to "1898", as I do not read all posting!
During this period how many different water marks were used?
Were there any right and proper watermark errors discovered during this usage period?
